School’s Out for Summer!

Mid-June saw the end not just of the school year, but of Nyan’s first primary school altogether, as it is being closed so the land can be redeveloped as public high school.

Before that, though, there were lots of activities, events and special days. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Each morning all year long, one of the children would ring the gong, alerting everyone that it’s time to head to the classroom. One day in June, it was Nyan’s turn!

Another day, Nyan’s class showed off their song-and-dance moves. That’s Nyan on the right, behind a very enthusiastic Nadia:

His class held an ‘art competition’ in which every kid was invited to turn in their best drawing or painting. Nyan took part; he didn’t win with his submission, “Robot Factory Train” — we never heard who did win — but the point, of course, was just showing off his chops.

One day was declared to be ‘express yourself day,’ when the kids could skip their uniform and wear whatever they wanted. Nyan’s outfit, which he picked out himself, wasn’t bad, we thought.

On the very last day, just before dismissal for the last time, they had a special flag-lowering ceremony.

That same day, Nyan’s class had a potluck lunch where everyone got to hang with their friends for the last time, at least the last time at Chatsworth East.

Finally, some pictures of our boy on the morning of the last day. So long, Chatsworth!

Happy Birthday, Riley!

Just before the end of the school year, Nyan’s classmate Riley had a birthday, so one Sunday morning in June we headed up to the climbing-wall place where we happened to have been for Kyle’s birthday earlier in the year.

Nyan got all geared up for climbing:

(Yep, that’s Jonnie, Jayden’s brother, waiting too.)

Then the climbing itself. Nyan didn’t last too long at that, frankly.

He (and many of the other boys) was far more interested in running around, yelling, goofing, play fighting, getting socks very dirty. Being little boys, basically.

Another highlight? Popping into the little shop at the climbing gym and discovering that they had some kids’ sunglasses on sale. Nyan just *had* to have them.

Winding Down the School Year

As Nyan’s primary school year wound to a close, there were plenty of events and activities to keep us busy and entertained in the month of May.

One such event was called Family Day. It was held on a Saturday morning in mid-May and featured lots of food, music, games, and some giant inflated bouncy castles! That’s what we focused on with our video-taking. Check it out:

Later, at month-end, they had the family BBQ night, which included plenty of food and, before that, song-and-dance performances from all the kids. Here’s the tent they set up on the school grounds:

Here’s Nyan’s class up on the stage performing their song, a Bob Marley classic:

After a picnic dinner on the grass, there was lots and lots of playtime – featuring a couple hundred hyper, happy kids.

Lots of fun times and fun memories during the final days of the school year, and in fact of the school itself (it’s being closed and the land will be turned into a public high school).

Nyan Vs. the Wall

A few weeks back, Jayden’s parents organized a little get-together for a handful of kids at a nearby indoor wall-climbing place. Daddy had been climbing once before and loved it; Nyan hadn’t been but said he was willing to give it a go. So off we went!

The afternoon started with everyone getting fitted for their harnesses and going through a safety and how-to briefing. Nyan, of course, had to put on his most miserable face for the camera.

We did some climbing on the walls, but it wasn’t long before Nyan and Jayden decided they’d rather spend some time in the little area that simulates, I guess, cave climbing — with more of a slope to the wall, and not as high.

It was fun, but it wasn’t long before one of the staffers came over to tell us that while kids aren’t exactly banned from that part of the facility, they aren’t exactly encouraged to be there either. We took the hint and headed back to the climbing walls.

Here’s our boy bravely scaling the wall:

And here he is, live. Jayden too.

Okay, so Nyan isn’t yet the next [insert name of a famous rock climber here]. And maybe he never will be. But he gave it a go, and didn’t give up when the going got tough. Well done, Nyan!

Nyan and His Friends

Nyan’s a sociable little fella, and he seems to be pretty well-liked by most of his peers and classmates. Let’s take a look at some recent interactions.

His old friend and former classmate Valentina had a birthday party at her condo in April, so we got to catch up with her and with some other former classmates like Isla and Abi. There was swimming:

And cake and food:

And general play:

It rained pretty heavily for part of the party, which led Nyan to narrate some goofy weather reports. (We think that’s it — hard to hear for all the rain!)

The most fun, surely, came when the kids all discovered the condo’s handball court. Kids + handball court + balloons = mayhem!

Of course, no mention of Nyan’s friends is complete without plenty of mentions of Jayden, his classmate and friend from the other side of our condo complex.

Here are the lads running wild one morning after a sleepover:

Another friend is a girl Lara. She’s 10 or so, lives in the apartment just below us, and is often downstairs in the evenings, running around with the other kids. She’s quite nice and takes good care of the younger kids. One evening she gave Nyan a scooter ride.

Finally, one Friday morning in April, Nyan’s school hosted a family PE event, where the adults and the kids played various games like dodgeball and whatnot. Lots of kids, lots of activity, lots of sweating. Here’s Nyan, making silly faces as he sits with his classmates:

And various shots from before and after the events.

No actual video of the games, since Daddy was too busy running around and being chased by the kids!

He’s off to a new school next year and surely will make even more friends and pals there.

Fun and Games with Nyan

When Nyan’s not reading or playing with his Legos, he’s doing… well, all sorts of things. Let’s take a look.

There’s his Lego robotics class every Saturday morning. Recently he built a Lego machine gun.

Also on Saturdays is his afternoon/evening soccer class. Check out how excited he gets when he… kicks the ball.

Then there’s his Thursday evening taekwondo class, which always starts out with some stretching. (And of course, any video that Daddy takes through the window of the classroom inevitably ends with Nyan looking at the camera and grinning.)

Not all of his fun comes from a class, though. Several evenings per week, Nyan is downstairs at our condo complex, running around and playing. Usually with Jayden, but sometimes Jayden isn’t around, like one recent  evening when only Lily was there. Here they are playing a little one-on-one soccer.

Nyan has a complicated relationship with Lily: his bestie is Jayden, and Lily is also close to Jayden. Nyan does not like it when Jayden is playing with Lily and so is not especially warm toward the young lady. So, it’s somewhat remarkable, in a good way, that Nyan is able to play nicely with Lily. Of course, it tends to be only when Jayden isn’t around, but it’s something at least.

The Sleepover

Every so often – not often enough for the boys, to be honest – Nyan and Jayden have themselves a sleepover. We pretty much alternate between Jayden’s place and Nyan’s place, but no matter where it’s held, it’s sure to involve lots of toys, imaginative games, giggling, reading, staying  up too late, and being a bit tired the next day.

They had another one in March. Here they are, reading and goofing around:

And goofing around the next morning (do you see a pattern here?).

Lots of hugs, too, as they say goodbye in the morning (even though they’ll see each other again the next day at school, if not later the same day around the apartment complex!)

Yep, these boys sure do love each other.

Happy Birthday, Jonnie!

Jonnie is the younger brother of Nyan’s bestie, Jayden. He turned 4 in February, and his family threw him a party at a place called Amazonia, a sort of indoor playground place where we’ve actually been before, for Kyle’s 4th birthday a few years ago. It was the one with the giant dinosaur, here.

It’s quite a place, Amazonia, with climbing structures, a huge slide, function rooms, and a room dedicated to these cannons that fire soft missiles at targets on the wall.

There was also a large room with a putt-putt golf course. And it had black-light special effects!

Was there cake? Of course there was cake.

And lots of balloons, which lots of kids had lots of fun with.

Beyond all that, we also saw plenty of simple, random silliness.

And finally, the slide. The same slide that, three years ago, Nyan refused to go down at first. (It *is* pretty big, it’s true.) But once he finally went down it, he wanted to go down it again and again. And it’s still enjoyable today.

Happy Birthday, Adriana!

Sadly, we don’t get to see much of Adriana or other old classmates these days, now that the MMI kids have all scattered to different schools. That’s why we were extra excited to hear that Adriana was getting a few of her old friends back together for an afternoon to celebrate turning 7 years old — at a trampoline park, no less! Nyan was there with proverbial bells on.

Besides Nyan and Adriana, attendees included Kyra, Abi, Valentina and Ning Ning, plus various younger siblings and parents. Here are some of the old gang:

There were cake and snacks, of course.

But the real draw was the bouncing. Look at how patiently they lined up, waiting their turn:

Turns out that our boy is a natural on the trampoline.

Besides trampolines, there were spring-y bounce-y slide-y climbing wall thingies:

Finally, check out the brave birthday girl, doing a special thing where they basically, I guess, throw her off a ledge.

She was the only one who was allowed to do that one, which is probably for the best — Nyan is a lot more brave and risk-taking than he used to be, but we don’t think he’s quite ready for that one just yet.

Happy Birthday, Kyle!

February is always chock full of birthday parties, and this year was certainly no exception, with no less than three weekend parties spread across the short month. We kicked the festive season off by celebrating with Kyle, whom we don’t see nearly often enough.

He was turning 7, and his parents threw a party at a recreational place that featured multiple climbing walls. A great place for hyper kids (and their parents too) to burn off some energy!

Nyan wasn’t too interested in climbing, but he did have fun playing around with the wall that had images projected onto it, images that would change when they were slapped.

There was plenty of cake and sweets and song-singing, of course.

A special treat was the dry ice they used to give the cake that foggy glow. The kids played with the leftover dry ice afterwards, too.

And a kid’s birthday party isn’t a kid’s birthday without plenty of random playtime, plus bubbles…

Look how big little Kara – Kyle’s sister – is getting!

We leave you with some images of Daddy scaling the walls. That’s right, the parents could climb too. Daddy had never gone climbing before but he picked it up pretty quickly. Well done, Daddy!
