Learning to Swim

We’ve been working on getting Nyan to swim off and on since he was not much more than a year old, including lessons at an indoor pool in London, outdoor lessons here in Singapore, and lots of time in the ‘big pool’ (five feet deep) with Mommy and Daddy to get him acclimated. He never really took to it: he loves splashing around when someone’s holding on to him, and he’s fine in the baby pool (18 inches deep or so). But in the big pool on his own (with floating arm bands) or, god forbid, being dunked under water? Forget about it. HATED it.

Until now. Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve had a breakthrough.

It started, perhaps, in early May when Nyan saw a snorkel and mask at a store and said he wanted it. So we obliged. He looks good, no?

Here he is, modeling the snorkel and doing a little dance.

But the breakthrough came a couple weeks later. We were all in the big pool, with Nyan’s arm bands keeping him safe from sinking. He was not assured, however, and was clinging to either Mommy or Daddy and would not let go. We got to talking to some neighbors who have a boy who’s about a year older than Nyan, and another son who’s 18 months old. The older boy was all over the pool, jumping and diving and swimming. Nyan watched him intently, as he does.

After a little while, the 18 month old was walking along the edge of the pool, also wearing arm bands, when he suddenly just jumped right into the pool and swam back to shore. No problem; he’d obviously done it many times.

Seeing an actual baby being so confident in the water must have triggered Nyan’s competitive gene, because not long after that, he climbed out and… jumped in! And kept doing it, over and over. First he insisted that Mommy or Daddy be very close to the edge of the pool, such that he basically was jumping on top of them. But then he demanded they move farther and farther back. Here, have a look:

That was after a couple of weeks of practice. As you can see, he’s now actually ‘swimming’ — or at least kicking enough to get some movement. This video is a few weeks old; he’s now using his arms a bit, and has also gotten quite good at laying on his back and kicking. The other day he ‘swam’ across the entire pool — maybe 50 meters — on his own.

(Also the other day, after we’d taken his arm bands off in preparation for going upstairs for dinner, the little man ran to the edge of the pool and jumped right in! We got to him within a second of course, so he didn’t sink or anything, but still — enough to give us all a little heart attack. Our new rule: watch him like a hawk if the arm bands aren’t on. And also lecture him extensively about how he cannot do that!)

In any event, he’s making huge strides of late. We couldn’t be more proud.

He still goes back in the baby pool sometimes, just for fun. Like here, playing with his pals:

And check out the video.

Notice about 10 seconds in how he gets some water in his face, and how proud he is: “Daddy, I go under the water!” Well, not exactly, but you gotta love his attitude!

Photo of the Day: Water Park

The shopping mall down the road from our place has a small water park up on the roof. Pretty standard amenity for Singapore, frankly. Here’s the boy a few weeks ago, splashing away without a care in the world.

Swimming Lessons

A few weeks ago, Nyan joined his school friend Oregon and a few other kids for some rather casual swimming lessons at a nearby condo. We did about four lessons or so, before dropping it (it wasn’t really structured enough to be worth the time or money). But before that, we managed to get in a lot of fun, much of which was captured on video and in photos. They show how far Nyan has come, given that he hardly wanted to dip a toe in the water when we first got here six short months ago.

Look at that brave boy, floating and kicking without a care in the world.

There was plenty of time for fun too. Here’s Nyan with Oregon:

Here’s Nyan, sort of walking/strutting along:

And here is Nyan the dinosaur. Or is it turtle? Sea horse?

Finally, some fun with his classmates.

Playdate with Kyle, Part Two

After school the other day, Nyan invited his buddy Kyle over for a swim and supper. School is just across the street from Nyan’s apartment, so it was an easy trip. First, the two lads donned their swimsuits and hopped in the pool.

Kyle brought along some pool toys, including a battery-operated orca and a battery-operated whale shark. Nyan loved them, and didn’t exactly want to share:

It’s all good though. They still had a good time.

Later we went upstairs where the dynamic duo ate pasta while Nyan showed off his toys. Then he showed Kyle his room, including his books and the rocking horse that Uncle Scott made for Nyan.

Next up for these two: playing hookey on Friday and heading off to the zoo. We’ll let you know how that goes…

Into the Pool

In the weeks leading up to our move to Singapore, we would tell Nyan about all the things we’d be doing, such as going to the beach and visiting lots of swimming pools. He was always less than enthused, usually saying that he’d be making a sand castle while he watched Daddy or Mommy swimming.

On one of our first days here, Mommy and Daddy were swimming in the rather large pool at the hotel we’re staying at, and predictably enough, Nyan decided he would get in the pool after all. Of course, Nyan being Nyan, he had to do it on his terms – which is to say, by riding Daddy’s shoulders. Not that Daddy minded.

Later, young Nyan Thomas got brave enough to go in the pool by himself. Well, it was just the kiddie pool. But that still counts:

“Swimming,” Nyan style. He also found time to strut around the pool.

Sad to say, we haven’t been able to get back to the pool too many times since then, as our days have been filled up with apartment viewings, school visits, trips to government offices to get our visas squared away, and the like. But we’ll get back in there soon, and we fully expect him to be swimming laps in no time.

Swimming!

Long-time readers will recall that, back in what passed for spring this year, Nyan Thomas took about eight weeks of swimming classes. After a summer break, it’s time for more: that’s right, more swimming lessons for our little man.

We’ve had two weeks so far, with maybe eight more. So far so good. Week One, he was not at all happy for the first 20 minutes of class – lots of crying, holding tight to Daddy, etc. Though he started to enjoy himself, a bit, at the end. Week Two, it took about 10 minutes until he warmed up. Then he was really enjoying it – to the point where, at the end, when we did the exercise where he stands on the edge of the pool and sort of falls/jumps into daddy’s arms in the pool, he was doing it with almost no prompting, and was truly enjoying it.

He’s also enjoying ‘swimming’ itself, which mostly means being held in the water and kicking his legs a bit as Daddy swooshes him around the pool. Baby steps.

As an aside, we also note that the young man is enjoying his baths again. He went through a phase, starting over the summer, where he would just REFUSE to bathe. We’d do it anyway, with a damp washcloth as he stood in the shallow water. But still, it was no fun. But we’re happy to report that over the past couple weeks, he’s getting back into it. He lets the tub fill up as much as it can, then he’ll lay down on his belly, kicking and splashing and pushing himself around the tub. “Swimming!” he says happily. Yes indeed.

In honor of Nyan’s return to the water, here are some photos from the first set of swimming lessons last spring – our hero showing off the season’s latest in toddler swimwear.

Swimming (with pictures)

Last Sunday, our intrepid hero got his first taste of real-live swimming in a real-live swimming pool. We figured he’d enjoy it, given how much he loves playing in the tub, and how much fun he had in a little kiddie pool in the backyard over the summer. So we signed him up for a baby swimming class at a nearby recreation center. So how did he do? Read the rest of this entry »

Nyan Thomas Goes Swimming (pics and video)

Our boy has never, ever been afraid of being in the water; his nightly bath is perhaps his favorite time of the day, and getting him out of the tub is never easy. So we were very excited to learn that Cousin Mia had left an inflatable pool at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Last Saturday, the first hot day since we got here, we blew it up – it’s an impressive thing, with two sections, a small slide, and a seahorse that sprays water out of its mouth if you hook a hose up to it – and got Nyan into his swimsuit. Mia came over and put on her swimsuit as well, and the two of them splashed, swam and laughed for quite a while. Okay, so Nyan was a little confused at first, as you can see in the video down below: he was a wallflower, clinging to the side and tepidly splashing his hand in the water. But before long he was all over the place, as the pics prove. (Click any picture to start a slideshow)
