Nyan’s School Portfolio

As we have mentioned, much of Nyan’s artwork, writings, and other school work has been collected into a large binder, called My Portfolio, all year long. It’s a wonderful book, and we got to take it home for a couple weeks, during which time we scanned some of the best bits. Let’s take a look.

It includes a fair number of photos from throughout the school year

A letter he wrote to Mommy:

Half photo, half self portrait. Check ot the detail on his shirt.

This next one is a fun one:

20180202_120243.jpg

Check out the detail! Of course, he’s drawing Mommy and Daddy’s bedroom, not his own, since he ends up in their bed most nights, still. Grr. But whatever: see Daddy checking the news as he enjoys coffee in bed; see Nyan reading in bed; see the dresser, the window and curtains, the ceiling fan, the round bulb atop the bedpost! The kid has a good eye.

Things he likes: food. music. library. reading. sweets. etc.

And things he dislikes, including cabbage, drowning, stinky smells, deep dark woods and some music. And bugs, too.

Some random factoids he learned about Singapore history:

He drew this happy self-portrait at the start of the school year back in August. Good stuff.

IMG_20180206_0031-1.jpg

(The words are small; they say: “I feel happy because I am doing science” and “I feel happy because I met Jayden.”)

Last but not least, this wasn’t in his Portfolio but we’ll include it anyway. For Chinese New Year — the Year of the Dog — the kids put resolutions of sorts on paper dog bones, and pinned them up on a board at school. Nyan’s: “I need to improve on fast writing. I need to impove on listening skills.”  We certainly wouldn’t disagree on the second point, at least!

Nyan and the Student-Led Conference

In February, Nyan’s school had a day devoted to “student-led conferences.” It was a time for the parents to get up to speed on what the kids had been doing in school — and it was up to the kids to show them. Nyan took us around to various stations, showing off his skills in reading, math, PE, music and more.

He’s been learning about Singaporean history, so he shared some of his knowledge:

He read some Chinese. Translated it too!

For the music section, he taught Daddy how to do some rhythmic clapping. There were bells to ring too.

For the PE segment, the students were getting ready for their Sports Day exhibition, so Nyan demonstrated some of what he would be doing. Like long jumps:

There was throwing as well:

And sprinting too!

We’ll have more on Sports Day in an upcoming post. We’ll also share excerpts from Nyan’s portfolio — the big book chock full of some of his recent writings, drawings, and other school work. Stay tuned!

A  (Potential) New School

The school that Nyan currently attends, Chatsworth East, is closing down at the end of this school year in June, relocating to a new campus on the other side of the island. We decided that we didn’t want to send him there — it’s too far to commute each day, and we didn’t want to move house — so we went back to the market for a new school.

One possibility was a brand-new school, opening this summer for the first time. It’s run by a company that operates several other schools across Singapore, and has a good reputation. So when we heard there was an open house at the new place one Saturday, we decided to go.

The building isn’t huge, but it’s been nicely done up inside. Here are some of the new classrooms:

Nyan was understandably most interested in the specialty rooms, like this music room.

They also have a science lab!

And a room full of tools for cutting, sawing, pounding and 3D-printing.

It was hard to pull Nyan away from this room, frankly.

There was also one of those wall-displays where you put pipes and shelves and whatnot and try to get marbles to roll down. Nyan loved that as well.

Finally, he had a blast exploring the gymnasium area, full of ropes and balls and hockey sticks and other fun things.

It was an impressive school, though it felt a bit small and lacked any outdoor space. Most crucially, it was still pretty far from our place and would have called for a long bus ride every morning and every afternoon. In the end, we chose another school, much closer to home, that he’ll enroll at starting in August. More on that later in the summer.

Nyan the Young Scholar

Time for a periodic check-in to how Nyan’s doing at school. In short: just fine.

Here are some random pictures of the walk to and from school:

Walking around with various friends, mostly Jayden:

Here’s just a wee bit of his recent school work. We’ll have much more on this in the near future.

We live in the tropics – just north of the equator, in fact – which means we sometimes get tropical downpours. In January, we had a lot of them, usually at the exact time when we were heading home from school. No problem, though, with umbrellas and raincoats.

And finally, some of the funny faces our boy makes in the mirror of the elevator as we’re heading to school in the morning or coming home in the afternoon.

Nyan Thomas, Elf!

For much of the autumn, Nyan (and occasionally Jayden) would occasionally and suddenly burst into a song. “I always get, that special glow, when the snow comes falling down… I belong in Christmastown!” It was a bit random, especially in sunny, equatorial Singapore. Come to find out they were learning the song for their school Christmas play/musical. Well, finally, in early December, it was time for the play itself.

20171206_101545.jpg

It was held at a public school auditorium just up the road, and included all seven grades from Nyan’s school, performing before an audience of parents and grandparents. Here’s Nyan’s class singing a song about having a happy jolly Christmas:

The play itself was a telling of the Will Farrell Christmas movie Elf, which none of us had seen (in fact, we started watching it over the holidays, but Nyan didn’t like it, so we stopped). We won’t bore you with videos of the songs performed by the other classes, but it was actually a fun musical with lots of good performances. There are some talented kids at Nyan’s school.

After the musical, there were some photo shoots, including group shots of Nyan’s class:

Daddy took some close-ups of our hero being silly:

Jayden was there, as was his younger brother Jonnie, who also attends Chatsworth, so we got some candid shots of the three of them goofing around.

It was a nice way to kick off the holiday season, as well as wind down the school semester.

Fun Days at the New School

As we’ve reported, Nyan has taken quite well to his new school. Let’s take a quick look at some recent activities.

Here is an assignment he did for class: the children were to come up with a scenario that presented a problem, and then use this certain system (the “T.A.G. system”) to solve the problem. Nyan’s illustrations are pretty awesome.

Another day, they took a quick field trip to the nearby post office. As part of the trip, the kids wrote letters to their parents and addressed an envelope, then mailed them off. The next day, this lovely letter was in our mailbox:

One of Nyan’s extracurricular courses this fall was called “Race car engineering.” Kind of like the old-fashioned soap box derby, it involved the kids building plastic race cars that they would then race around a track. Here are some pictures of Nyan and Jayden working on their cars (these are photos of photos that were on display at school, hence the weird quality), plus a video of Nyan in deep concentration.

Let’s see a couple of random pictures: heading home after school on a rainy day, all dressed in his uniform and reading a bit before school.

And last but not least: a goofy video of a goofy boy, full of high spirits when he arrives home after a fun school day.

School Assembly, With Songs

Every so often, Nyan’s school has a school-wide assembly to talk about this and that, and the classes each take turns leading the presentation. In mid-November it was Nyan’s class’s turn, and parents were invited!

First everyone sang the school song.

The theme that Nyan’s class chose to talk and sing about was about healthy life choices. So we were treated to a couple of excellent songs, including this one about healthy food versus junk food:

They also stressed the importance of leading a balanced life:

There were also little skits. Nyan took part in this one, the theme being, uh, not sure. Playing nicely with your friends, maybe?

That was about it – no big deal, but good messages, and good catchy tunes too.

Preschool Graduation!

Nyan, of course, has been attending his primary school for a few months now. His old preschool, Modern Montessori International, is on a different annual schedule, so the kids who are going on to local schools (rather than the “international” school that Nyan goes to) have still been going to MMI, ahead of their new school year that starts in January (rather than the August school year start for Nyan’s school). Got all that?

The upshot is that in November, MMI threw its annual graduation ceremony for all the kids who are leaving. Nyan and several other kids who left in August came back and joined their classmates for the festivities.

Here’s the procession into the auditorium.

All the graduates, standing on the stage. So serious!

20171111_150714

And the main event (for us anyway): Nyan bravely marching across the stage to get his diploma from Uncle Jimmy.

Before the ceremony, there was lots of hugging as all the kids got together. But there were also some nerves, methinks.

We’ve surely said this before, but MMI was such a great experience – great teachers and fantastic kids whom we really hope Nyan can stay in touch with.

United Nations Day at School

Nyan goes to what’s known here in Singapore as an international school. It basically means it’s a private school that’s intended for kids of ex-pats (as opposed to the local school system, which is quite difficult for ex-pat kids to get into, unfortunately). Among the benefits of an international school:  your kid will certainly make friends from all over the world. The kids in Nyan’s class hail from places including Vietnam, Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, the U.K., the U.S., India, New Zealand, China and many more. It’s a great mix.

To celebrate all that diversity, the school held “UN Day” in mid-October. Everyone wore clothes representing their heritage; Nyan could have chosen the U.S., U.K. or Myanmar. He chose the latter, and wore his Burmese soccer shirt.

Here’s his class, parading around the school grounds

The highlight was a performance of a few songs that Nyan’s class had been practicing. It certainly attracted the attention of photographer-parents.

Here they are, taking the stage:

Here are the songs. A lovely piece about diversity etc. called Under One Sky, which Nyan had been practicing around the house for weeks:

And another one about all the different ways to say Hello in different languages. No mention of “mingalaba,” which of course is “hello” in Burmese, though:

Afterwards, the class posed for a group shot. Nyan had to be a goof, of course.

Back to MMI, Briefly

In mid-September, we got word that Nyan’s old school, MMI, would be taking class pictures. We thought it’d be nice to get one last picture of Nyan with all his classmates, since he spent more than half the calendar year there, so we headed over to MMI one morning before Chatsworth (his current/new school).

This being the last year at MMI for this group of kids, they put on graduation gowns for both individual and group photos. Here’s Nyan getting set for his host of individual shots:

And prepping for the group shot:

There was some time to goof around with his pals, too:

A few weeks after that, Chatsworth was closed for teacher meetings, so Nyan went back to MMI to spend the day. Had a blast too:

They were doing a unit on space and planets, and the teacher used some app on her smartphone to make it look like the kids were holding planets. Pretty cool:

And, yeah, more goofing around with, and hugging, his classmates:

Want to see how those class photos came out? Sure you do. Here you go:
