New Friends

We’re extremely pleased to report that Nyan has started to make some new pals here in Singapore. After two months of hanging out with Daddy pretty much non stop, the poor kid, he’s now got some friends at his new school, and he’s started to pal around with kids here in the apartment complex too. The complex is five 21-story towers, built around a series of swimming pools and playground. On weekends and in the evening, the place is heaving with kids. The other day, Nyan noticed that one of the kids, a fella maybe six months younger than Nyan (his name’s Aiden, but they call him Danny Boy for some reason), had a plastic digger or bulldozer or the like. So Nyan went upstairs, got his own plastic digger, and went up to the little boy to share and play. And they were off to the races.

Later they moved over to the playground, where Nyan and Danny set up a shop, just like Nyan used to do back in Wanstead:

Danny’s older brother was there as well.

Now, almost every day when Daddy and Nyan walk home from school, Nyan peels his eyes for Danny Boy. If he sees him, Nyan will run up to him, and then it’s a good hour before we’re able to get Nyan upstairs for dinner. But that’s perfectly fine! Here they are on another day, climbing up the jungle gym.

Nyan Thomas, Kung Fu Master

Well, not quite. But he’s been going to a kung fu-for-toddlers class for a few weeks now. It’s every Sunday morning, about a 10 minute walk from our apartment, just off the beachfront park (which means we often end a kung fu session with a trip to the beach, to watch the ships in the harbor and catch some ocean breezes. Life is good). He enjoys the classes for the most part, though he does lack a certain, shall we say, focus. And the motor skills to do a lot of the activities. But more often than not, he tries, and seems to have fun. Here, then, a bunch of videos from recent weeks, showing off his moves, or lack thereof.

Of course, it’s important to stretch before exercise. (Shot via a mirror, hence the low quality):

There’s a lot of exercises that call for Nyan to run up to the teacher and punch or kick various things. Let’s just say he’s got some work to do

But at least he’s enthusiastic:

One of Nyan’s favorite activities is where he has to scale a wall, swing his legs over, and drop down on the other side. Fun to watch too:

There are somersaults too, which Nyan also enjoys:

And finally, here’s Nyan putting his kung fu skills to work on the streets. Or at a shopping mall food court. Same idea:

Helping Around the House

Nyan loves to help. No matter what an adult is doing, Nyan has to do it too. It’s a great trait, almost always (and we’re still working on the best ways to use it to our advantage!). Here’s a good example, from a few months back. Uncle Jeff was visiting us in London from the U.S., and bought a few bottles of British beer that he wanted to pack up and ship home. Guess who decided to help out. (And he actually did a pretty good job helping!)

National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is housed in a grand old colonial building not far from downtown and the shopping district of Orchard Road. I can’t tell you what all is in the museum, but they recently opened a new section just for kids, and better yet, it was free – so Nyan and Daddy headed down there.

It was a bit of an odd display, to be honest, but no complaints; it was fun, it was interesting, it kept the boy occupied for a while. One room had a pretend kitchen, which of course our boy took to like a fish to water, or a chef to a kitchen.

There was also a giant TV that was open at the back – intended, I think, for kids to put on puppet shows and pretend they’re on TV. And some sort of faux reel-to-reel tape player. Not sure what the point of that was, to be honest.

The best part – Nyan’s favorite certainly – was this giant fabric thingie with all these holes. You were supposed to roll these plastic balls along the fabric and into the holes – but it was tough because the fabric was uneven, so the balls went every which way. It kept Nyan occupied for quite a while:

And Nyan. Oh Nyan. That friendly and cute little girl is trying to help you out! She’s trying to give you balls to roll down! But you, you little boy you, you don’t care. Ah, Nyan.

Nyan Thomas, Paleontologist

Down by the water in downtown Singapore, there’s an odd building called the Art Science Museum. It’s shaped somewhat like a giant metallic lotus flower, I’m told – very striking in any case. Inside is a rotating series of art and other displays (recent exhibits include photographs of Annie Liebovitz, for instance).

Another current exhibit is all about dinosaurs – so in late May, before we moved in to our new apartment, Daddy and Nyan braved the midday heat and spent a couple cool hours in the dark halls of the exhibit. And because it was a weekday, and maybe because it was rather expensive, we had the place pretty much to ourselves!

Walking like a dinosaur:

Checking out a giant dino skull:

(Note: not a real skull – none of the bones you’ll see in these videos are real – but a very realistic looking plaster cast of a real skull).

Seemingly more fascinated by the gravel than by the giant dinosaur (that’s our boy…):

And here he is in the arts and crafts section at the end of the exhibit, showing off his jumping moves in front of a mirror.

And finally, this is the little pool at the bottom of the inside of the lotus flower. A pretty cool structure!

Fountains by Night

Nyan used to be a bit skittish around water. Washing his hair – especially the rinsing part – was an exercise in patience and crying. He tolerated going in the pool with Daddy at swim lessons, but just barely. He even went through a phase when he refused to take baths, so we could only sponge him down. (This was only a couple weeks long, thankfully).

I think it’s fair to see he’s over that skittishness. He loves playing in the pool, he doesn’t fuss at all when we’re washing his hair, and he runs through fountains no matter what he’s wearing or what else is going on.

Here he is a couple weeks back, on a Sunday evening in a part of town called Clarke Quay. It’s got lots of bars and restaurants, and also a big fountain with lots of colored lights. Nyan was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Or like a fish to water? He didn’t actually splash around, for which we were thankful, since we were on our way to dinner. But he certainly has come a long way.

Dance-off!

A few weeks back, we were all having dinner at a local shopping mall when this 18-month-old boy came up to Nyan. They checked each other out, and then Nyan started dancing. Then the kid started dancing. Before we knew it we had an old-fashioned dance-off going on!

I’m not sure who won. See what you think:

A Smattering of Not-So-Recent Videos

Some summertime housekeeping here at NyanThomas.com has led to us unearthing some unpublished videos from the past few months. We present them in no particular order other than roughly chronological. Enjoy!

In this first video, from January, our hero puts on the headset that Mommy uses to do conference calls for work, and attempts to commandeer her work computer as well. (And check out him shushing Mommy at about 40 seconds in. Cheeky!)

Nyan messing around with some old milk bottles, working on his motor skills. From February.

Shortly before we left London in April, Nyan at bedtime, talking in a silly voice about silly things:

Also in April, we went through a phase where every day after school, Nyan would take off running across the village green, and Daddy would dutifully record it on his phone. Here are several examples. It’s mostly just a lot of Nyan running, asking questions, being silly.

Hotel Living

From early May through early June, we all lived out of a hotel room in Singapore. It was quite nice – large, great staff, fantastic grounds including playground and a huge swimming pool. We were certainly ready to move into our new place once we found it, but no complaints at all about the place we stayed (it’s called Tree Tops Executive Residences, by the way, and we recommend it highly). Here are a few photos and videos of what Nyan got up to during our time there. Swimming, playing, napping, waiting for a taxi with Mommy, etc.

Plus a couple of videos: one of his favorite games was to run through the hallways, looking for our room. They all tended to look alike, of course, which made it a challenge. And it also burned off some of his voluminous energy! Win-win.

And here he is, just relaxing on the couch, reading the paper. As you do.

The Singapore Zoo

Nyan loves animals – what kid doesn’t, of course – and we’d read that Singapore has one of the world’s best zoos. So last month, a few days after we arrived here, Daddy and Nyan spent a day at the zoo. We weren’t disappointed.

It rained heavily that morning, but the skies were clearing when we arrived at the zoo, shortly after it opened at 10am. The rain meant no crowds, which meant we had the animals mostly to ourselves. We started out at the polar bear exhibit, where Nyan was wowed as he watched the bear dive under the water and eat fish. (He still talks about that today, more than a month after our visit.)

A small sampling of some of the other animals we saw: zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, lions, birds, monkeys, kangaroos. And a cheetah.

And pygmy hippos.

And organutans.

And turtles and fish.

Monkeys too.

The highlight, perhaps, was the elephant show. All morning long, Daddy had been promising that we’d make it to the elephant show, which somehow in Nyan’s mind became ‘We’re gonna see the elephants dancing!” Well, they didn’t actually dance, but they did put on a nice show for us.

Video from the show:

He looks less than enthused, but that’s just ’cause he was paying close attention. And perhaps because the midday heat, the humidity, the jetlag and the hours of running around were all catching up to him: after the elephant show, we made our way to the exit, and he fell asleep in the car within a few minutes of driving off.
