Nyan Thomas Goes to Church

We live just around the corner from an old church (as does, I think, everyone on this island, actually. It’s quite nice). We hear the bells ringing all the time, and we walk by it every day both to and from school. It’s a lovely old building, perhaps 250 years old (that is to say, it’s a fairly new build). Here’s a photo of the exterior:

Nyan being Nyan, he became quite curious about this building, and many mornings would ask if he could go inside. Well, no, we had to explain, as it was time for work and/or school. But someday.

A couple weeks ago, that some day came. One Saturday afternoon, Mommy and Nyan wandered into the gorgeous building and checked it out. Nyan, as you can see in this video, was happy, smiling, giggling, asking ‘what’s that?’ as the organist practiced:

There was also a food donation box, and Nyan asked about it. So they walked across the street to a little grocery store, bought a few cans and other food, and returned to the church, where Nyan placed the food into the donation box. Never too early to teach him the importance of generosity!

Saturday Night Fever: a Harp, a Wedding, a Dance

Nyan’s Uncle Ye and Aunt Lisa got married on Saturday afternoon/evening. It was a beautiful sunny day out in the Essex countryside, and a lovely ceremony and dinner/reception. Nyan Thomas was to be a page boy, helping escort Lisa into the ceremony.

Unfortunately, it was a 2:30pm ceremony, and Nyan fell asleep at 1pm for his usual nap as we drove toward the venue. We arrived at 1:30 and he was snoozing away, so we let him keep sleeping in the car, since he needed some rest. Daddy finally had to wake him up at 2, and the young man was not a happy camper. Not throwing any fits, just dour-faced and clearly in no mood to be a page boy. So he was all dressed up with nowhere to go… but hey, he looked good at least. (Most of these pictures are from the photo session immediately after the ceremony.)

Of course, within half an hour of the ceremony ending, he was in his usual high spirits: Read the rest of this entry »

Nyan Thomas Explains it All

Or at least explains how a vacuum cleaner works.

The other day, we had the vacuum down in the kitchen to clean up a bunch of food that *somebody* spilled on the floor. When we were done, Nyan launched into this tremendously detailed explanation of how the vacuum works. It had something to do with jets of water, a chimney, the vacuum’s “leg” (which seems to be the extension part), and something he insists is called a “fint.” Oh, also, there are buttons that go “beep” when you push them.

After 10 minutes of this, Daddy grabbed his camera and started recording it. And he went on for five more minutes. After this video ends, Mommy came into the room and Nyan started explaining things to *her* – just as detailed and lengthy.

Oh yes there’s also the vacuum’s special feature that requires a carrot to be inserted into it.

This is our boy.

Nyan Thomas, Airplane Pilot

A video in which our boy flies an airplane (using one of Daddy’s camera tripods as, I guess, the microphone the pilot uses when he comes on the intercom), and drives an ambulance (complete with flashing lights), flies a helicopter, and makes sure Mommy and Daddy are wearing their helmets. Kid definitely has a good imagination.

I am robot. I am a box.

Some silly videos from the past couple of weeks. First up: our boy, being a robot – one of those new-fangled robots that have empty paper towel rolls as arms.

And when he’s not being a robot, he’s being… a box.

Finally, for good measure, here’ss a quickie of the lad babbling as he reads a book during dinner time. You can just hear Grandma L. on Skype in the background.

Nyan Thomas, M.D.

It’s been an unpleasant few days here at Nyan Thomas World HQ. Starting Thursday, Mommy was bed-ridden with what we’ll call flu-like symptoms (achey, fever, no energy, etc). And starting Friday evening, Daddy was the same. So far – touch lots of wood – our hero is still healthy, though we’re monitoring him closely and in fact today sent him to Colchester with Uncle Iain, partly to keep him from our viruses, partly to allow Mommy and Daddy to rest. And also so he could actually have some fun with various aunties, uncles and cousins, rather than mope around the house with a couple of sick old people.

So far so good, in any case: we seem to be on the mend.

But this morning, and yesterday, Nyan was nothing but gorgeous. He was cuddly, he wasn’t *too* demanding on our time, and best of all, he was our personal physician: he found this baby thermometer with a frog’s head at one end and decided that was his ‘doctor stick.’ So he’d walk up to one of us (likely as we were prone on the couch or bed, half awake) and ask where it hurts. We’d point to an elbow, or leg, or head, and he’d rub that spot with his doctor stick. “All better!” and sure enough, we were all better! “Why thank you, Dr. Nyan L.,” we would exclaim.

This morning (Sunday) we all felt a wee bit better, so we hung out in the front room for a bit. Here’s Nyan being silly and fun (not sure what’s up with that hair though…)

And here he is having a massive phone conversation with Phwa Phwa, Grandma and Grandpa all at once!

Nyan Thomas Cooking Ice Cream

This is how we spent our New Year’s Day morning: cooking ice cream using the humidifier, and learning about steam. Except our boy already knew about steam: when I explained what it was, he instantly made the connection between steam and trains. How did he learn that?? How does he learn a lot of what he knows, for that matter? We think he may sneak onto our computers and read random articles on Wikipedia when we’re not looking. Would explain a lot.

Anyway, here’s Nyan being Nyan. And cooking ice cream.

Nyan Thomas and Cousin Mia (pics and video)

Our boy totally adores his cousin Mia, who is five years older than him and who lives in Iowa. They don’t get to see each other too often, sadly, but when they get together, he follows her around non-stop and whatever she does, he does. We try to use this to our advantage – for instance, if Nyan isn’t eating his veggies (or anything at all), we ask Mia to take a bite. She’s happy to comply, and when Nyan sees her chowing down on a piece of broccoli, for instance, he does the same.

They have a lot of fun together regardless. They both love to read:

And there’s always lots of hugs and kisses and giggling: Read the rest of this entry »

Fun Times with Uncle Jeff

Earlier this month, Uncle* Jeff came through London on business and stayed with us a few nights. Nyan hung out with Jeff and Aunt Michelle in June, and never forgot the red double-decker bus that they bought for him. So he was very happy to see Jeff, to say the least.

(*Technically not his uncle – Jeff is Daddy’s cousin which makes him, what, a second cousin or something. But Uncle is easier.)

There were lots of hugs, shoulder rides, book-reading and general fun.

On Sunday morning, we headed to the Docklands neighborhood of London, where they’ve set up a free exhibit showing new technologies that will make cities more liveable in the future, or something like that. Lots of things for Nyan to play around with and explore: Read the rest of this entry »

“I fly in a airplane! In the sky!”

So sayeth young Nyan Thomas earlier this month as he jetted from London, to Chicago, to Iowa City, and back again. He’s always been a great flyer – he’s been airborne since he was about four months old – and even as he has become more alert, and more of a handful in some ways, he’s still pretty much a pure pleasure to travel with.

Here’s the lad on our flight from London to Chicago, including a nice long nap.

We had a somewhat lengthy layover in Chicago; our hero passed the time by running around, chatting up strangers, offering grapes to fellow passengers, etc. Standard stuff. Here:

Near the end of that video, when Nyan says ‘I look at bike, Daddy,’ he’s referring to the Harley-Davidson motorcycle we had earlier come across – a chopper that was inexplicably just sitting there in the terminal. Nyan was oohing and ahh-ing over it, and some dude standing there said ‘Go ahead, he can get on it!’ So up Nyan went. Then the dude, who I had thought was somehow in charge of the bike, walked off. Oh well. Nyan had a blast:
