The School Christmas Party

20161223_124428

Nyan’s school threw a fantastic Christmas party a few days before Christmas. Song, dance, food, cookies… well, let’s go the video. Starting with Nyan’s class doing their rendition of Jingle Bells… in Mandarin:

And it’s not a Christmas pageant without a (rather long!) rendition of the 12 Days of Chrismas.

Maybe our favorite part, though, was a special dance recital. See, Nyan does this weekly class called KinderDance at school. It’s only a handful of kids who do it, but he mostly enjoys it. They were scheduled to do a recital as part of the party. (Note: last year, they were also scheduled to do a recital. But our hero was in the midst of his not-gonna-perform phase, so he just sort of stood there and sulked while his parents looked on in bemused embarrassment. That didn’t prove to be a problem this year though). One of the kids in the class was away on holiday, and another was sick or something. So it ended up being just Nyan and a younger girl. And – at least in the eyes of his proud parents – he did a fantastic job! Checkout the tap dancing:

And this sort of modern, interpretive thing:

Of course you can’t have a Christmas party without Santa:

(Nyan cracked the code though: in that video, when he’s not dancing, he’s whispering to all the adults: ‘That’s not really Santa Claus!’)

At some point the party turned into a preschool dance floor:

After all the fun and songs and dancing, it was time for lunch! Here are the kids, singing their usual pre-lunch song. It’s quite nice:

Bonus track: a few days prior to the party, Daddy happened to come by the school a bit early and catch the kids practicing.

Nyan Thomas Does Halloween

When we asked Nyan what he wanted to be for Halloween this year, he was unequivocal: he wanted to be a knight. Okay then. We looked around a bit for a decent knight costume to purchase, but found next to nothing — certainly nothing good. Not to worry: Mommy’s pretty skilled and creative at sewing and other craft-y type stuff, so she dove right in to a labor of love: making our boy a knight costume from scratch. And what a job she did. We used a sword and shield we’d gotten at Legoland, and a helmet and dagger from a castle in England, but the rest was all homemade. Check it out:

Is that awesome or is that awesome?

Here he is, strutting his stuff around the pool:

That was at a Halloween party that the apartment complex threw for all the kids. More scenes from that, including a mummy-making contest.

Then it was time for trick or treating! It was Nyan’s first time to actually go trick or treating; we went to every one of the five towers in our apartment complex, hitting up those apartments that were taking part. Maybe 30 or 40 in all. Nyan hooked up with Jayden and his brother Johnnie to do it:

By the end of the night, the costumes were getting a little intermixed:

And then we found a toy knife that Nyan just had to try out. Okay, Daddy too.

Silly. But fun.

Nyan Thomas on the Fourth of July

Though he lives overseas, Nyan Thomas was indeed born in the USA, and this was the first year that we were actually in the US on July 4. So of course we had to celebrate.

Nyan got the day started by dressing in red white and blue, and then by turning a paper grocery bag into a knight’s costume. As you do on Independence Day, of course.

The highlight of the day, though, was a trip to downtown Iowa City with Mommy, Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa, for an evening of fireworks over the Old Capitol, the classic building at the heart of downtown that was once the capitol building for Iowa but is now part of the university. It was an absolutely lovely and warm summer’s evening, and we managed a good seat even though the crowds were out.

As dusk settled in, the fireworks started. Nyan had never seen fireworks in person before, and when the first (extremely loud) barrage started, he was a little startled and got momentarily upset. But, as you can see by these videos, he pretty quickly settled in and very much enjoyed the show.

Here are some still photos of Nyan and Daddy enjoying the fireworks:

Finally, please enjoy these shots of the fireworks. It was a pretty impressive show, and a great way to end the day.

Chinese New Year

The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year (or CNY), is a big deal out here in Asia and in Singapore — two public holidays, huge parties and family get-togethers, much symbolism. And, in Singapore at least, a big festival down at Marina Bay. There were carnival rides, carnival food, giant inflatable peacocks, acrobats — standard festival fare, really.

It was a beautiful evening:

And a lot of people came out for the colors, the fresh air, the inflatable peacocks.

Phwa-Phwa (Mommy’s Mommy) was in town so she joined us.

We ate a fair amount of rather lousy food (carnival food, what do you expect), including a lime-green popsicle for the young man.

Did we mention there were carnival rides?

There were carnival rides. Including this sort of kiddie roller coaster (okay, that’s maybe stretching it a bit) featuring lots of cars and trucks going up and down a twisty track. Nyan loved it.

There was also a train. Nyan got to sit in the front, along with several other random boys. They all happened to be wearing orange t-shirts, purely by coincidence.

Yes, Nyan had a blast. He absolutely loved it. Happy belated Chinese New Year, everybody!

Nyan Thomas and the Holiday Spirit

It’s a few days past Christmas, we know, but we hope you’ll indulge us as we share a couple videos of our boy singing Christmas songs. Sort of.

Here he is, moments after being reminded that he needed to behave if he wanted Santa to bring him presents, busting into his rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town:

And here he is, singing a take of Jingle Bells that quickly devolves into… well, we’re not sure what. His own distracted version of Jingle Bells, I suppose.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Cookies

While we were in Iowa last month, Nyan did a great job helping Grandma bake cookies, and helping Grandpa decorate them.

He has good concentration, when he wants to.

And of course Nyan got to sample his work!

Merry Christmas from Nyan Thomas!

Nyan got a special early visit from Santa Claus himself the other day. Some photos:

Video evidence that Santa does indeed exist:

Here’s more, with Nyan pointing out all the Santa decorations around the house:

And here’s a nice action shot, taken by Grandpa, of the reaction when Santa walked in. Think Mia was excited?

Here she is on the old man’s lap. Yep she was quite happy.

Merry Christmas!

In the Holiday Spirit

Cousin Poppy had a birthday party on Saturday. It being almost Christmas, there were some dancing Santa thingies. Here we see Nyan not really sure what to do with them at first… but it’s not long before he gets into the spirit and dances right along.

Today’s Photos: Easter Bonnet!

IMG_3238

On Wednesday evening, Daddy was picking up Nyan from school when one of his carers mentioned there was to be an Easter bonnet parade on Thursday. “Have him bring a hat if you can. It’s too late for an Easter bonnet, I suppose, but that’s okay, just a hat will be fine.” Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s Photos: Christmas

Yes, we’re a few months late here, but it just struck us that we hadn’t gotten around to posting very many of the photos from Christmas. And there were a LOT. So here’s a slideshow of Nyan Thomas getting his Christmas on. (A few of these photos have been posted before, but they’re well worth seeing again, we’d argue…)

Click on any photo to enlarge and start the slideshow.
