They say the ladies love a guy who can dance, right? If that’s true, then look out, ladies, ’cause Nyan Thomas is on the dance floor!
Er, yeah. Maybe not so much. That’s Nyan at a friend’s birthday party the other day. The look that his friend Valentina gives him pretty much says it all. Oh well.
While we’re at it, here are a couple of photos from the same party.
Kyle is Nyan’s BFF — a former classmate who now attends a different school, they’re still thick as thieves, and we get the boys together as often as we can. Sometimes they do something major like go to the bird park (as you’ve seen in other posts). Sometimes it’s as simple as hanging out at Nyan’s pad, playing with toys, swimming, riding scooters.
Once in a while, Kyle’s Mommy picks up Kyle’s cousin Ava from Nyan’s school (she’s at Nyan’s school, a year ahead). On those lucky days, Nyan gets a ride home in the back seat of Kyle’s car.
And sometimes, the play date ends up at the Singapore Swimming Club – not for swimming so much as for a nice meal, where the two friends laugh and tickle each other throughout the meal.
Maybe the best part about a trip to the swim club comes at the very end — when Nyan and Kyle get some bread and head to the koi pond for a feeding session.
Most days after school, Nyan and Daddy spend a good hour or so down at the playground at our apartment complex – burning off energy, getting fresh air, socializing. There are a good number of kids around Nyan’s age who are usually down there at the same time. Here’s some of their recent hijinx: This is Nyan and Neil, a boy who also happens to attend Nyan’s school.
Here’s some fun on the playground equipment: This is Nyan with Justin, a very sweet boy who’s a year or two older. They have a blast together, and recently discovered that Nyan can sit on the back of Justin’s bike while they tool around the complex. (And yes, Daddy insists that Nyan wears his shoes while doing this. He just happened to get away with no-shoes this one time.)
One day, none of the other boys were around, but in one of the function rooms near the playground, someone had put a toy kitchen. So we hung out there, cooking (notice the exchange after he gives daddy some chicken rice. “It’s delicious. How did you make it so good?” “I put oil on it.” The kid is turning into a fine chef, even if just make believe for now) and bouncing around the room and being silly. Speaking of silly, here’s Nyan, being silly. And, at one point, being a dog. That’s our boy.
A month or so ago, Nyan’s pal Kyle turned four years old, and his parents threw a fun party at a local indoor playground type place. There were climbing structures, a huge slide, ball pits, and of course cake and other snacks. And lots of Nyan’s classmates from school. Fun for all!
Here’s Nyan and Nat-Nat (Nathaniel) in the ball pit:
And here’s Kyle, affectionately tackling Nyan in the same pit:

And finally, a quick video of that giant slide we mentioned. That’s Adrianna fearlessly rushing down. If you squint really hard, you can see Nyan waaaay up at the top… refusing to come down. The kid can be a little bit cautious when it comes to trying new things. Eventually, Daddy was able to coax Nyan onto his lap and they rode down together a few times. And guess what? Nyan loved it, when he finally gave it a try. There’s surely a lesson in there somewhere.
A few weeks back, Nyan’s friend Aiden came to town with his parents, so we all got together down at the beach, a 10-minute stroll from our apartment. We don’t actually go in the water at this beach — too much trash and lord knows what else, thanks to the scores of ships that drop anchor just offshore, as you can see in some of the pictures — but it’s a lovely place to catch some sun and breeze, kick a ball around, and build a sand castle or three.
It’s the rainy season here in Singapore. For instance, it was pouring when we woke up this morning and kept pouring until about noon. (Did Daddy and Nyan get soaked on the quick walk to school, despite an umbrella? They did.)
We always try to be prepared, so a few days ago, when Daddy was on his way to pick up Nyan at the end of the school day, he noticed the sky looked rather threatening with rain. So he grabbed Nyan’s umbrella, just in case.
When he got to school, Nyan and his friends – including Kyle, Adriana, Ling Ling, Nathaniel and Kyra – ran up to Daddy and excitedly pulled the umbrella out of his hands. And then they… well, just look:
Silly kids. For the record, we did not need the umbrella on our way home, either.
Daniel is Nyan’s pal from the apartment complex. He’s about the same age (I think they were born a week apart) and they get along great. Daniel’s a sweet kid with a very vivid imagination that’s full of witches, dragons, and the like.
In this video, they are apparently using Daniel’s inflatable pool shark to form some sort of bulwark against an invading army of dragons. Or something like that. See for yourself:
Here we have the two lads randomly running around the playground and making random noises:
And a bonus video, Nyan on his own, building up a head of steam and then… jumping through the rope jungle gym. Sort of.
After school the other day, Nyan invited his buddy Kyle over for a swim and supper. School is just across the street from Nyan’s apartment, so it was an easy trip. First, the two lads donned their swimsuits and hopped in the pool.
Kyle brought along some pool toys, including a battery-operated orca and a battery-operated whale shark. Nyan loved them, and didn’t exactly want to share:
It’s all good though. They still had a good time.
Later we went upstairs where the dynamic duo ate pasta while Nyan showed off his toys. Then he showed Kyle his room, including his books and the rocking horse that Uncle Scott made for Nyan.
Next up for these two: playing hookey on Friday and heading off to the zoo. We’ll let you know how that goes…
Nyan’s best friend is a boy named Kyle. Kyle and Nyan go to the same school, and Kyle lives just down the road from Nyan. So last weekend, the two boys (plus the four parents) got together at Kyle’s place for an afternoon and evening of fun and food.
Kyle’s Mommy and Daddy were nice enough to pick us up in their car. Here’s Nyan while we were waiting:
Once we got there, the adults hung out chatting at the table while the two boys played with Kyle’s toys — his dragons, dinosaurs, sticker books, cars and trucks, etc. Standard boy stuff.
Kyle also has an electric car, and his apartment’s main space is big enough that there’s actually room to drive around in it. So off they went, with only a handful of fender benders.
We got video too:
Kyle has an electric train set, too, so Nyan, Kyle and their Daddies spent a little time putting it together and making the trains run.
And here are two boys and their two mommies:
Yes, a very fun time – if it had an off note, it was predictably enough only at the very end, when Nyan did not want to go home, and Kyle didn’t want Nyan to leave. We addressed those issues, sort of, a couple days later, when Kyle came over to Nyan’s house after school for swimming and fun. More on that in Part Two of this post.
Nyan at school, “drawing” with his friend Joseph at the end of a long day. It’s all fun and games and giggling until Adrianna – who’s unquestionably the alpha female of the class – tells them off for being “very noisy!” Does that admonition keep our hero from his art? Click and find out:
