Nyan Thomas Does Burma (or Myanmar)

Long-time readers may know that Mommy was born in Burma, a.k.a. Myanmar. She hadn’t been back since 2003, and Daddy had never been there. So when we moved to Singapore a couple years ago — Singapore being just two hours or so by plane from the Yangon, the capital — we put Burma high on our list of places to visit.

Or rather, places to visit eventually, since Nyan was not yet three years old, and we thought he was still too young to subject him to a very, very developing country.

By earlier this year, we decided it was time. Phwa Phwa was visiting Myanmar for a few weeks, so Nyan, Mommy and Daddy popped over for five days. It was a pretty amazing place. (Editor’s note: the names Burma and Myanmar are used fairly interchangeably. There’s a deep history behind what each particular name means, which we won’t try to go into here. For sake of consistency, we’ll call it Myanmar from here on out.)

Let’s start off with a look at random scenery from around Yangon. We should note that it’s a fascinating place, filled with gorgeous old buildings and friendly and helpful locals, but it was also run by a military junta for many decades. A lot of urban amenities — like closed sewers and organized traffic flows — just don’t exist. Keep that in mind as you look at this first batch of pictures, which, yes, does include a shot of several layers of crumbling sidewalk with open sewer beneath.

Myanmar is home to a tremendous number of Buddhist temples, and Yangon is sort of built up around Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the biggest and most opulent temples you’ll see. We went there one evening:

Another night we visited Sule Pagoda, which is in the heart of downtown Yangon. Part of it features a wooden model ship in which you put offerings; then you turn this hand crank and it drags the boat up to a pagoda. Nyan dug it. Read the rest of this entry »

Springtime in Singapore, Part Two

Continuing our look back at the first part of 2016, here we have a bit of what Nyan got up to in April. Plenty of action this month – birthday parties, playdates, Phwa Phwa visiting, and we even got a visit from Uncle Jeff at the end of the month. Not bad at all.

All the Right Moves

They say the ladies love a guy who can dance, right? If that’s true, then look out, ladies, ’cause Nyan Thomas is on the dance floor!

Er, yeah. Maybe not so much. That’s Nyan at a friend’s birthday party the other day. The look that his friend Valentina gives him pretty much says it all. Oh well.

While we’re at it, here are a couple of photos from the same party.

That’s Entertainment!

Every year, the kids at Nyan’s preschool put on a big concert/recital/show at an auditorium, along with kids from a few other schools. Our boy has lots of personality, so we were very excited to see how he’d do on the big stage! Sure, a couple months prior, as rehearsals ramped up, he had expressed some reluctance to perform — but that reluctance had disappeared, and we had little reason to suspect he wouldn’t be one of the stars of the show.

Oh, how wrong we were.

It started off well. The auditorium was packed, the kids were decked out in their costumes, everyone – Nyan included – seemed in high spirits. Here’s some shots from before the show:

Then it was show time. Nyan, along with three of his classmates — Sander, Ning Ning and Kyra — had been selected to come out and warm up the crowd before his class’s performance. Here they are – a bit shy, sure, but good enough:

Then came the, shall we say, issues. The problem, we figured out later, was that the lights were off in the auditorium, of course – so anyone on stage couldn’t see anyone in the crowd. Just a sea of black. So our poor boy, in the very front row, looked out and saw nothing – least of all, he didn’t see Mommy and Daddy. He was not happy about this. How did he respond? He sulked through the entire performance. Oops. Mommy and Daddy were a wee bit embarrassed, but mostly we just thought it was hilarious. There’s always one in every crowd – and this one happened to be ours! Eh, what are you gonna do.

Check out these pics and videos (with apologies for the poor quality and shakiness):

Oh dear. At the end of the show, all the kids from all the schools came out for one big finale. The house lights were on at this point, so he could see us sitting about 20 rows back – and that seemed to make all the difference.

Afterwards, Nyan was all smiles and silliness. He goofed around with pals Adrianna and Nathaniel:

He held hands with Ning Ning as we walked out of the auditorium:

And we joined another classmate, Tanya, and her family for lunch at a nearby restaurant. More goofing around ensued.

So, all’s well that ends well and all that. The kid doesn’t like to perform in front of a huge crowd, or even a small crowd – he’s hardly alone in that. There’ll be another school concert later this year. How will he do? Eh, we’re not expecting much. But it’s all good.

Of Boats and Planes

We like to sniff out lesser-known little corners of Singapore, and we found a couple of gems recently: The Boat Museum and the Air Force Museum.

The Air Force Museum is exactly that – a museum devoted to the Singaporean Air Force. It’s on the edge of a nearby airbase, and it’s got a nice indoor display of the history of the force, and a large space downstairs with actual jets, helicopters, missile launchers and more. There’s even a flight simulator, though that wasn’t working the day we went.

Did our boy like it? Silly question.

We also came across the Boat Museum — more properly known as the Singapore Maritime Gallery — tucked away in a little corner of downtown, on the water, of course. It’s put together by the local container shipping industry, so it’s got a real pro-shipping vibe, but that’s fine. There’s displays of the history of shipping in Singapore (shipping having been what really put this tiny island on the map, way back when), models of boats and ships and oil rigs, and views of the nearby ferry terminal and all the boats at anchor outside of Singapore Harbor.

Perhaps best of all: there’s a boat simluator — it lets you pretend to be at the helm of one of several types of boats, and you try to steer it through storms, marine traffic, waves and more. Pretty cool!

We liked both places very much, and agreed that although they’re out of the way and not the easiest to get to, they definitely deserve being visited again. So when Grandma and Grandpa visited recently, Nyan made sure to take them to the Air Force Museum!

The flight simulator was working this time, so Nyan and Grandpa got to play:

Here’s to Singapore’s excellent lesser-known museums!

Birthday Party, Part Two

You may recall that Nyan turned four back in July, when we were in the USA. We had a big party at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, which was a blast. But we also wanted to celebrate with his Singapore friends. So in late September, after we returned home, we rented out the event space at our apartment complex and threw him another party, complete with food, games, pressies and cake. And lots of kiddies.

Here’s Mommy leading the kids in a rousing game of Pass the Parcel.

And the cake. Nyan wanted a fire engine cake, so that’s what he got.

There was fun at the playground too:

Near the end of the long, fun day, some of the kids hopped into the pool – including the guest of honor and bestie Kyle (complete with Thor hammer):

It was a really fun day, but pretty tiring for Mommy and Daddy. After having thrown two parties for his birthday in the same year, we decided that for his 5th birthday, we’ll do something a little more low-key — or better yet, hire out an event space and have them do all the work…

Water Park!

A couple times in recent months, Nyan has headed out to a waterpark called Wild Wild Wet with BFF Kyle. Their two daddies tagged along, and enjoyed it too, but these trips are all about the boys. Here’s a quick look at what they get up to.

Here they are, messing around before heading in.

So much fun to be had…

All that playing really helps you build up an appetite!

Birthday Party Part One

Back over the summer – July 26, to be exact – our boy had a birthday. Turned four years old. We happened to be in Iowa at the time (to be precise, we happened to have planned our trip to make sure we’d still be there on the 26th) so Grandma and Grandpa helped Mommy and Daddy throw a big ol’ bash.

It was a real family affair, with dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins, you name it Lots of kids too, and they all had a blast together:

There were gifts to open too:

And of course, there was cake. Dinosaur cake.

And this wasn’t planned, but at some point, Mommy Daddy and Nyan were out on the front porch, and someone had a camera, so we did an impromptu photo shoot.

So why did we call this post “Birthday Party, Part One”? Because we had another birthday party when we got back to Singapore. We’ve got pictures from that one too, which we’ll share in the near future…

Summertime and Time Capsules

We hear it’s well into autumn back in the US and UK. Well, it’s been lovely and hot and humid (but no haze!) here in Singapore, which I guess has put us in a summer-y sort of mood. So we’re looking back at some lazy days over the summer, when Nyan got to hang out in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, building a fire in the evening and lounging on the hammock in the afternoons. And always, always, his little mind whirring, his imagination in full gear.

At the end of that video, there’s reference to a time capsule. You see, Grandma and Grandpa had him fill a little metal box with some coins, a toy car and a note, and then they buried it near the apple tree they planted earlier. In a few years, we’ll dig it up.

Here’s video of the actual burying:

Finally, a panoramic view of the backyard itself. Lovely place to spend some summer time.

Tennis, Anyone?

The other day, Nyan was racing around our apartment complex, burning off some after-school steam, when he noticed his friend Neeil on the tennis courts. Neeil was batting a tennis ball back and forth with his dad.

Nyan promptly hijacked the court, nicely asked Neill to borrow his racket, and started playing withe Neeil’s dad (who was extremely gracious about the whole thing).

He’s not exactly the reincarnation of Andy Murray. Or even John McEnroe. But he sure had fun.
