Virtual Gallery: Recent Art by Nyan

Nyan’s becoming ever more adept when it comes to using a pen, crayon or marker to express himself. Just the other day he wrote out his name in large block letters (he spelled it Y N A N, true, but still, this is a big deal!) and his coloring books show definite improvement over his earlier scribbles.

Beyond all that, though, he’s expressing his very fertile imagination through ever-more-elaborate drawings. Okay, ‘elaborate’ might be overstating things a tad, but the point is, he’s definitely progressing. Some recent examples, with annotations either by a teacher or by Mommy:

Not bad, eh? Here’s one he did last night. It’s an ice cream shop, and there on the far left is Nyan walking to the shop, holding hands with his baby. And no, we don’t know what that means either.

This is a couple of cars:

This one is from school. He didn’t draw the face, just did the coloring. Pretty interesting palette choice, no?

BONUS: Not a drawing, obviously, but an example of Nyan’s imagination at work: He took Rollie, his stuffed panda bear, and set him on a little stool. Then he took a little wooden jewelry box type thing, put it in front of Rollie, and declared: That’s Rollie working on his laptop.

Gardens by the Bay

We’ve been a bit quiet on these here blog pages of late. Apologies for that. To make up for it, here are a few photos from one of Mommy and Daddy’s favorite places in all of Singapore – Gardens by the Bay! It’s an absolutely gorgeous botanic gardens sort of place, with great views of the Singapore skyline and fancy light shows every evening. You saw pictures in a recent post showing the gardens decked out in Christmas lights with fake snow blowing all over the place. Here are some shots from a few weeks before that, when Grandma and Grandpa were in town.

On the Beach

A few weeks back, Nyan’s friend Aiden came to town with his parents, so we all got together down at the beach, a 10-minute stroll from our apartment. We don’t actually go in the water at this beach — too much trash and lord knows what else, thanks to the scores of ships that drop anchor just offshore, as you can see in some of the pictures — but it’s a lovely place to catch some sun and breeze, kick a ball around, and build a sand castle or three.

Not a bad way to spend a January afternoon.

Pirate Ship!

Back in November, when Auntie Zuzu and Uncle Iain were in town, we pulled Nyan out of school for a day and took him to Sentosa Island — the resort island just south of Singapore — for some time at a waterpark. It’s called something like World of Water or Port of Fun or something along those lines, but ’round these parts at least, we call it the Pirate Ship. Because it’s basically one giant pirate ship:

There are buckets that dump huge amounts of water on your head. There are water slides. There are water cannons. There are little splash pools. There’s a friendly and surprisingly decent cafe right there. And it’s all pretty much perfectly sized for an energetic three year old.

After a few hours of splashing and sliding and generally running around, the lad was exhausted, and he fell fast asleep in the taxi on the way home. All in all, we’d call the visit to the Pirate Ship a complete success!

Nyan Thomas, Hoops Star

The hotel we stayed at in Vietnam offered a basketball hoop to the side of the tennis courts, so one cloudy afternoon, Daddy and Nyan grabbed a ball and shot around for a little while. Let’s just say that what they lacked in skill, they made up for in effort. (This sadly applies to both Daddy and Nyan). Check it out…

Happy New Year!

A very happy new year from everyone here at Nyan Thomas World HQ, to all our loyal fans and readers around the world. This year promises to be an exciting and fun-filled year, but we thought we’d kick things off with a quick look back at the year that was. 2014 was pretty eventful for us – a move from London to Singapore, exploring the Little Red Dot (as this island is known), traveling around Southeast Asia, settling in to a new apartment and new school, making new friends… whew!

Eventful, yes, and overall very successful, we’d say. Nyan continues to amaze and delight his Mommy and his Daddy — that is, when he’s not exasperating them with his cleverness and mischievousness. As we tell each other all the time: Hey, he’s three years old – what do you expect?

No further ado, here’s a review of Nyan Thomas in 2014.

January 2014 — What’s With All the Clothes? It was a typically dark, damp and chilly January in London. It’s weird now to see Nyan dressed in long sleeves, winter coats, etc.

February 2014 — Big Boy Bed. Winter continues, but Nyan’s happy – especially when we convert his crib to an open-faced Big Boy Bed. He’s growing up!

March 2014 — Spring Soon Come. Still in London, but a lot of outdoor pictures from this month. Perhaps getting in shape for all the time we spend outside in Singapore?

April 2014 — A Farewell to London. Our final days in London featured a going away party, lots of packing and last-minute errands, and some dudes breaking into our house in the middle of the night as we slept upstairs, making off with our car, Daddy’s camera, a couple computers, some cash, etc. A typical month, really.

April/May 2014 — Interlude.  Nyan and Daddy spent three weeks in Iowa, soaking up that Midwestern goodness before heading east.

May 2014 — Hotel Living. A few weeks in temporary housing as we start to settle in to Singapore.

June 2014 — Settling In. A new apartment, a new school, then another new school after the first new school doesn’t pass muster.

July 2014 — Three!  Nyan turns three years old. Time flies.

August 2014 — Meet the Panda.  We met a panda at a local wildlife park. We traveled to Indonesia. Nyan visited the dentist for the first time. Action-packed month!

September 2014 — Langkawi. We visited Langkawi, Malaysia, and also took up some swimming lessons. Definitely feeling settled in here by now.

October 2014 — Dr. Nyan Thomas L. Nyan dressed up as a doctor for Halloween. He also hung out with his pals Kyle and Daniel, continued to swim, and mostly just kept being Nyan.

November 2014 — Visitors!  Grandma and Grandpa L., followed by Auntie Zuzu and Uncle Iain. A very good month.

December 2014 — Holiday Cheer. We visited Vietnam. We visited Changi Beach Park. We celebrated Christmas. Not too shabby.

Not a bad year at all, we’d say. Here’s to an even better 2015!

Recent Photos

Daddy finally got a new camera a few weeks back and is having a lot of fun taking shots all around Singapore. And of course he’s also taking about a zillion photos of one Nyan Thomas. Here, then, is a smattering of recent photos from the last few weeks. Some from home, some from the Tanglin Mall food court, some from Changi Beach Park, some from Gardens by the Bay… you get the point. No theme to these other than a silly little boy. That’s theme enough for us.

Nyan Thomas in Langkawi

A while back (pushing three months ago, actually, but who’s counting?), Nyan took Mommy and Daddy on a lovely long weekend escape to the Malaysian island of Langkawi. Here, better late than never, are a bunch of photos and videos to commemorate the time.

One of the highlights of the trip was when we bumped into another family, British expatriates living in Singapore and working in finance, and spending a long weekend in Langkawi. Sounds familiar, no? They also had two kids, including Sienna, who is about Nyan’s age. They hit it off great.

One cool thing about the resort was they had these big pools full of fish, and every morning a staff member would come out with big buckets of fish food for guests to toss in. Nyan and Sienna had a blast:

Can’t really see in these pictures or videos but there were two huge (six-feet long) water monitors, big slithery lizards that are native to Malaysia. Very cool. Also a giant catfish.

Here’s Nyan, bouncing and then doing something called the crab dance. Showing off for the ladies, in other words.

There was plenty of time on the beach too, with proper protection against the sun, of course:

And oh what a beach. What a place. We loved it. Just gorgeous.

Just for fun, because it’s not the most illuminating video ever: at night, we had races on the beach. Can’t see much in this one, but you can hear Nyan being Nyan and eventually he shows up… just watch:

Another night, we walked by the resort’s lounge and someone was playing a lovely song on the piano. Nyan and Mommy couldn’t help but dance. (Note how Nyan says incredulously, “He’s making song for us??” and then starts in on his ‘dance’ (but at least it’s not the crab dance this time):

More nighttime fun: Nyan found a flashlight in our room and pretty much wouldn’t put it down. Even interrupted his meals to wander around and shine it on things. The resort was almost empty, and we had the restaurant pretty much to ourselves, so no problem.

The weekend was mainly a late-birthday celebration for Mommy, so one night at dinner, Nyan made sure that the waitstaff and a string quartet gave Mommy a fitting serenade:

Here’s Nyan at lunch (the white noise in the background is a little waterfall at the restaurant), showing off his coloring skills.

And just a random assortment of photos from the weekend:

Nyan was, as always, an excellent flyer on this trip. To pass the time on the 90-minute flight, he took some shots with Daddy’s camera:

Finally, here’s our boy at the airport and on the plane, happy after a fun-filled and relaxing family weekend.

Photo of the Day: Water Park

The shopping mall down the road from our place has a small water park up on the roof. Pretty standard amenity for Singapore, frankly. Here’s the boy a few weeks ago, splashing away without a care in the world.

Nyan Thomas Feeds a Giraffe

Nyan took Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa to the Singapore Zoo last week. We happened to get to the giraffe enclosure right at feeding time – and for a few dollars, they handed us some carrots and let us feed the critter. Nyan was… well, he was less than impressed. And who can blame him, really – I mean, take a look at that long, black, snake-like tongue. Kinda creepy to a three-year-old.

Bonus: later, we came across a strange hairy monkey – seriously, dude was like a giant mustache that was swinging thru the trees – who jumped onto a fence post and checked us out. Nyan was still a little leery, but less so, and even managed to give a wave to the little fella.
