Today’s Video: Digital Native

Going back in time a few weeks for this one: Christmas Eve, at Grandma and Grandpa’s in Iowa City. Mommy is watching some movie or TV show on her laptop, while our hero shows off his prowess with all things digital, playing around with Daddy’s iPad. Also talking and pointing a lot.

The kid is 18 months old and he’s already figuring out how an iPad works, not to mention iPhones, telephones, TV remote controls… We will do our damnedest to make sure he gets plenty of non-screen time as he grows up – running around outside, reading books, connecting with people face to face. Happily, he’s already shown that he enjoys all of these things.

Today’s Videos: Nyan Thomas Does Christmas

We’re back in London, and we returned with lots of pressies for the boy and plenty of photos and video too. Here’s a couple of videos from Christmas Day itself. First up, Nyan Thomas opens a present – check out how bouncily excited he gets!

Nyan Thomas Meets Santa Claus

On Saturday, Nyan’s nursery (a.k.a. day care center) had its annual Christmas Bazaar – a fundraiser for some local charities and featuring raffles, music, snacks, face-painting, and Santa’s Grotto. Daddy and Nyan headed down for a little while, and not only did we win a faux-leather purse in the raffle, but young Nyan Thomas came face to face, for the first time ever, with Santa Claus himself! Halloween Party! (with pictures and videos)

Today was the annual Halloween party at Nyan’s nursery (aka daycare), and all the parents were invited to stop by in the mid afternoon. So we did – and we made sure that our young man had a proper Halloween costume, too. It was a big room with maybe 30 kids from age 1 to 5 or so, and about as many parents. There were songs, snacks, and general playtime. Best of all, if we do say so ourselves, was Nyan’s costume. Happy Fourth of July!

It’s just about dusk here in England, but weirdly enough to this American expatriate, there are no fireworks planned. Go figure.

Not to worry though: as you can see in the slideshow, Our Hero got into his finest patriotic onesie to send some love back across the waters. But of course, young Nyan Thomas is not just biracial but bi-national as well, so he made sure to slip into his best Union Jack diaper* as well.

*Over here, they call them ‘nappies.’ But on July 4, I say we call them diapers!

Happy Boxing Day!

Hello from a sunny and mild Essex County, England, where Mommy, Daddy and young Nyan Thomas are enjoying a relaxed Boxing Day with mommy’s side of the family. Daddy arrived on Christmas morning after a sleepless redeye flight from New York, and we’ll be here through New Years for family, relaxation, and Sharon and Chris’s wedding!

We’ll be updating this blog more frequently than we have been of late; at least that’s the plan. Without further ado, a trio of photos from NyanThomas’ first Christmas…

Today’s photo: Happy Thanksgiving!

Nyan Thomas celebrated his first Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. It was pretty much the same as any day, really, save for Daddy being home, and Grandma still being here. Except she had to leave for the airport while he was napping; he’s seemed a little out of it ever since she left. Still, it was a very pleasant, mellow holiday. Here, in honor of the day, a somewhat fuzzy photo (via the Blackberry) of our boy rocking his holiday outfit.

Today’s photos: Happy Halloween!

No costumes, trick or treating or caramel apples for young Nyan Thomas, not this year. A wee bit young for that. But not so young that we can’t dress him up in a Grandma-gifted pumpkin outfit!

(If you look closely, you can see that our boy decided to dress up this year as a baby with lots of drool coming out of his mouth. Scary!)
