On Sunday, Nyan wanted to take his ladies out to lunch – that is, the women who work at his nursery, the ones who get to spend all day with the young man, five days a week. So Mommy arranged it, and the three of us, plus about a dozen ladies from the nursery, all met up at the Westfield shopping center – right next door to where the Olympics were held – for lunch at a pizza restaurant. On Saturday, Nyan’s nursery (a.k.a. day care center) had its annual Christmas Bazaar – a fundraiser for some local charities and featuring raffles, music, snacks, face-painting, and Santa’s Grotto. Daddy and Nyan headed down for a little while, and not only did we win a faux-leather purse in the raffle, but young Nyan Thomas came face to face, for the first time ever, with Santa Claus himself! Happy 16-month birthday to the young man who is known variously as Ruggie, Sugarbear, HRH, Pumpy, Buddy, Dude, Thar Lay Nyan, Sir Hugs-a-lot, or simply Nyan Thomas. Here’s the man himself – one year ago today, and today (technically a couple days ago, but the point is the same!).
Last Sunday was a big day for young Nyan Thomas. Most importantly of course was his first real baby steps, which you read about in this post. But Sunday was also the day of his first real haircut! He’d gotten haircuts before: once back in December as a medical procedure, essentially – we shaved his head as a way to make his cradle cap medicine more effective (it worked like a charm, too) – and just a few weeks ago we gave him a quick trim over the bathroom sink because some of his hair was growing over his ears and bothering him.

Today was the annual Halloween party at Nyan’s nursery (aka daycare), and all the parents were invited to stop by in the mid afternoon. So we did – and we made sure that our young man had a proper Halloween costume, too. It was a big room with maybe 30 kids from age 1 to 5 or so, and about as many parents. There were songs, snacks, and general playtime. Best of all, if we do say so ourselves, was Nyan’s costume. We try to be good parents, and part of that is making sure we read to Nyan whenever possible. We’re pleased to report that he seems to enjoy books; he can’t read, of course, but he likes turning pages, and recently has shown more interest in the actual pictures. And he will sometimes even sit still for a few minute while we read to him! Positive signs, we’d say.
