Random Fun in the Month of April

Just our usual random collection of snapshots and goofy videos from the month of April. Lots of reading, napping, funny faces, playing with friends, etc. Also we’ll throw in a picture of one of his recent drawings, just for good measure.

We got him a history book. He enjoyed reading it to us:

And of course he digs just running around the house, being goofy.

(Yes, that’s some of his original art work.)

Fun Times in January

We said farewell in January to an old friend: the rocking chair we had bought when Nyan was on his way, some six years ago. The chair was showing its age, and not really needed, rocking-wise, so we upgraded to a nice blue thingie. That meant the chair had to go.

Nyan gave it a warm send-off as we took it downstairs to be taken to a farm upstate. Or the recycling truck, whichever.

What other bits of random silliness and fun did we get up to in January? Let’s take a look.

Here’s Nyan singing “happy birthday” for a video message to cousin Kiki:

Skipping for joy in a local shopping center:

He *really* likes this cartoon called PJ Mask:

Cartwheels at the end of a long school day. All gymnasts may be equal, but some are clearly more equal than others.

Good Times in England, Part Two

Part two of our two-part look at some smaller but often just as silly moments involving Nyan on his recent trip to England.

Like more sky-soaring:

And pictures:

Showing off, I guess, his taekwondo moves, plus some dance steps:

More piccers. If it looks like he slept a lot, that’s just the jet lag talking.

When Nyan was a baby, he was fascinated by Phwa Phwa’s cuckoo clock. Turns out he finds it just as hypnotic today:

One last batch of photos:

And finally. Trying to draw but mostly just being silly, excitable, manic. That’s our boy.

Good Times in England, Part One

As we’ve been showing recently, Nyan took Mommy and Daddy to England in August for a few weeks of fun with friends and family. There were castles, late night dance marathons, museum visits…. but Nyan’s days (and nights) were also filled with smaller moments that were no less fun and silly and perhaps even photogenic. Here, we capture some of them.

Like this precious moment. Some random dance, followed by some drawing, followed by…well, just watch.

Or that time he decided he wanted to be locked in the car’s boot  (or trunk, as they call it in America). Does this count as bad parenting? Nah.

A few random photos from these random days:

One morning Nyan decided he was a bee:

That was about the same time he did a display of what he calls “sky soaring”:

More pictures:

And finally, we saved the best for last. Nyan telling a story about aliens, a plane that’s bigger than the universe, and a rather unique take on economics:

We’ve got much more from the UK trip still to share. Stay tuned…

What’s in a Name?

A month or so ago, soon after we arrived in California, our hero — the young man with the active imagination — suddenly decided that his name was no longer Nyan. Nope: we were to call him…. Eagle. Who were we to object?

eagle

All was good, and we toured around northern California, happily calling our son Eagle. And then, on a lunchtime stroll along the Santa Cruz boardwalk, “Eagle” pointed to the sky and said “Look, Mommy and Daddy — an eagle!” We looked up into the sunny sky, expecting to see a bald eagle soaring there. Um, nope.

seagull

That’s right. Our son had taken the word ‘seagull’ and turned it into his new name, Eagle. Not quite as majestic…

But whatever; we kept calling him Eagle. A few days later, we made it to Iowa, where Eagle woke up one morning declaring his name was now… Digger. Okay then… later that day, Grandma read Nyan, er Eagle, er Digger, a book called Baby Whale. Moments later, Digger had another new name:

bdubs

Baby Whale!

Baby Whale stuck with us for a long time. Like two weeks or more. Making the mistake of calling Nyan “Nyan” would get you a quick rebuke. “No I’m Baby Whale!” Sometimes Daddy would tease the poor marine mammal by ‘mistakenly’ calling him Eagle. “No Daddy, I’m Baby Whale!” Okay, Baby Whale…

Then, as suddenly as the Baby Whale Era began, it was over. A few days ago, the lad woke up and declared he had a new name. He’s now known as… Nemo! We’re not at all sure what prompted this latest change; yes, he’s seen Finding Nemo a couple of times, and enjoyed it, but he hadn’t seen it of late, far as we know. Who knows how that little guy’s mind works.

In any case, we’re now several days into the Nemo Epoch. Soon after it started, Mommy and Daddy took a business trip to Florida, and what do you think we found at a local candy shop? Well, yes, there were stuffed Peppa Pigs, but we didn’t get Nyan any of those. But we did purchase this little fella for our little Nemo:

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. We just hope we won’t need to rename this website.

Our Boy

Just ran across this collection of intimate portraits of Nyan from late February, about two months ago. Presented without further comment, other than to just shake our head and say ‘yep, that’s our boy… Our silly, silly boy.’

Shadow Dancing

One of Nyan’s more recent fascinations is his shadow. To that end, one of his current favorite things to do is to run along under the street lights and watch his shadow, or more often just stand there and make silly motions to watch what his shadow does. He also asks why his shadow doesn’t have eyes. Here are a couple of recent episodes.

Frog

One of the enrichment classes that we put Nyan in at his Montessori school is a drama class. One day they were working on their animal movements (method acting, I suppose?) and Nyan decided he needed to stay in character when he got home. The character being a frog.
