Exercise. It Does a Body Good

Mommy and Daddy try their best to be good examples to their boy — we eat lots of vegetables, we don’t watch TV around him, we don’t yell in front of him, etc. And we also make sure he understands the importance of exercise. We talk about it in front of him, we do it in front of him, and we encourage him to be active. Seems to be working, at least based on his love of doing yoga.

It helps that his new school has a playroom full of toy exercise equipment – so Nyan gets to exercise while he’s having fun! Here’s a sneak peek at some of what he gets up to. Starting with… a trampoline!

There’s also a stair master, and a rowing machine.

And this contraption that you swivel your hips on.

Finally here’s just a bit more from that exercise session – maybe this is the cooling-down period? That’s Nyan’s good friend Oregon playing with the truck. (Yep, Oregon – a half Singaporean, half Dutch boy named Oregon. We’re not yet sure what the back story of the name is, but he’s a fun little kid with a cool name, so it’s all good.)

Progress Report: Nyan at 19 Months

Every few months, we get an in-depth assessment from Nyan’s daycare/nursery about his progress. We got one back in early March, and I typed the notes up, and am finally getting around to sharing it here. These notes are from when he was about 19 months old, and he’s actually developed quite a bit since then, especially when it comes to talking. But here’s the notes from early March, for posterity if nothing else. It makes for a nice snapshot of how our boy was acting, and what he was doing, at about 19 months old.

(The notes on ‘developmental stage’ refers to what the ‘normal’ range for when a kid does certain things. He was right on schedule.)

Personal, Social and Emotional

Self confidence and awareness:
Nyan is a bubbly, confident boy. He loves coming to nursery. He always comes in with a big smile on his face. Nyan is very good at finding his own nose, eyes etc and is also able to identify them on his carers. Read the rest of this entry »

The Nursery Report

Here’s a holiday treat. Regular readers know how much we love the nursery (daycare) that takes care of Nyan all day every weekday. The women who work there seem to completely adore our boy, and he loves it too. And we love the variety of activities, not to mention the socialization; he’s really advanced in leaps and bounds in the four months he’s been there.

Each day when we pick him up, we get a little piece of paper outlining his activities for the day, what he ate and how he napped, and any significant developmental milestones. Also, the caregivers – led by his key worker, Sophie – take great notes and numerous photos, which they then put into a scrapbook. We got a chance to review it the other day, and borrowed the book for a few days, long enough to scan the pages into JPGs which we now share here. It’s a remarkable document, and for the Nyan Thomas purist among us, it’s a must-read. It start with reports on his first few days of “settling in” at the nursery and continues through late November.

(Click on any photo to make it bigger so’s you can read what it says. Also, depending on your browser, you may also need to increase the Zoom on your browser’s view settings to see it more clearly. What can we say, WordPress has changed how it displays photos. Sorry!)

Enjoy!

Today’s Photos: Nyan Thomas at School

We write today from the Christmassy land of Iowa, where Nyan Thomas is being spoiled and greatly enjoying exploring his grandparents’ house (particularly between 3am and 6am – his body hasn’t yet adjusted to the time change!) More on his time here, and about what a true trooper he was on the long, long journey here, in a later post. For now, a handful of photos taken over the past couple of months at his nursery, a.k.a. daycare, or as we have taken to calling it, school.

Sunday Dinner with Nyan’s Ladies (Pics + Videos)

On Sunday, Nyan wanted to take his ladies out to lunch – that is, the women who work at his nursery, the ones who get to spend all day with the young man, five days a week. So Mommy arranged it, and the three of us, plus about a dozen ladies from the nursery, all met up at the Westfield shopping center – right next door to where the Olympics were held – for lunch at a pizza restaurant. Read on for more pics, videos and more…
