Nyan Thomas Loves to Swing

Auntie Zuzu and Uncle Iain came by a couple weeks back and took Nyan to the neighborhood playground. Iain put Nyan in the swing and pushed away. And lord did the young man enjoy it. Just watch these two videos. Pure joy!

A Walk in the Park

Ever wondered what our young man looks like as he slowly strolls home, snacking, after a fun day at school? Wonder no more as we share a couple of videos of the young man walking through the park. Plus a couple of bonus videos.

Walking through the park:

Bonus video: from a few weeks earlier, when it was sunny and warm, with chirping birds and a giggling Nyan: Read the rest of this entry »

Summer Party

A couple weeks back, Daddy’s job threw this year’s version of the annual ‘summer’ picnic/party. Like last year (which you may have read about here), it was held at Wrotham Park, a sprawling estate that’s home to many acres of hills, trees and ponds, plus a big ol’ manor house. And like last year, the ‘summer’ picnic took place in early September. That worked out well last year, as the day was warm and sunny. This year, not so much – it was cool, cloudy and threatening rain all weekend, and a cold wind was whipping up the hills. In fact, Daddy came down with a nasty two-week cold the very next day; Nyan, we’re very happy to report, did not get sick. Whew.

Still. it was a very pleasant family outing. Here’s the star of the show, jamming to a little tune about summertime:

There was plenty of food:

Nyan Thomas, Transvestite Farmer

Our boy is definitely a boy’s boy. Without any prompting from us or anyone, he fell in love with every truck, fire engine, airplane, car, tractor, or noisy mechanical thing you can think of. He loves to be loud, he loves horseplay, he loves to make a mess. He’s a boy.

But.

He also likes to wear dresses.

We’re of course okay with that. It’s just costume dresses that he puts on at school some days, and refuses to take off when it’s time to go home. Fair enough; if it makes him happy, he can wear a dress home. The only possible downside, far as we’re concerned, is that someday we’ll be able to embarrass him with photos and videos of him wearing a dress.

Like here. The other day, he wanted to play with his toy tractor and truck out in the backyard. While still wearing his dress. We present this without comment or judgment; just enjoy our boy being, um, a boy.

Please note that at the end of this video, when he pushes the trailer and it slides out from under him and he splats on the ground… he was not harmed whatsoever. The video ends abruptly ’cause Daddy wanted to make sure Nyan was fine. And he was. I guess maybe the dress padded his fall?

Road Trip: Sissinghurst Castle

Autumn has unfortunately arrived here in ol’ Blighty, with cool temps, overcast skies and occasional and sometimes heavy rain. So let’s take a trip back in time, about six short weeks ago, when the air was warm and filled with sunshine, the flowers were in bloom, and Nyan took Mommy, Grandma and Grandpa on a day trip to Sissinghurst Castle, about an hour outside of London. (Daddy got to stay behind and go to work, hooray!)

It’s more of a grand old house than a castle, to be honest (at least in Daddy’s opinion, having not been there), but it’s still gorgeous, with flowers and hedge mazes and old buildings everywhere you look. It’s part of the National Trust which means it’s both old and notable (and preserved).

Here then are a few photos from the day. (click on any photo to enlarge and start a slide show)

Today’s Videos: at the Playground

One of the nice things about our new home is that the walk to and from school takes us right through a nice leafy park. And it’s got a great playground area, where Nyan gets to visit on many days on his way home. Here are a couple of videos Mommy took on a recent visit.

Sunday fun: running, rabbits and more

It’s the waning days of summer here in London – the sun is coming up noticeably later, and setting noticeably earlier. The mornings are chilly. It won’t be long until we’re all vitamin D-deprived and despondent over the never-ending winter. But we here at Nyan Thomas World Headquarters like to live for today, so we’re just enjoying the last of what has been a brilliant summer.

To that end, here’s a whole slew of videos from a recent sunny Sunday afternoon as Nyan and Daddy hung out in the green space around the corner from our house — it’s less a ‘park’ and more just a grassy field with lots of old trees in it — and looked at a nearby pet store. Six videos in all, about a minute or so each, well worth the viewing.

Here’s Nyan and Daddy, setting off on their big adventure. In other words, walking down the street, with Nyan dragging his ladybug “bike” behind him.

Here’s the young man, running running running. And yelling: Read the rest of this entry »

Soccer in the Park

(Sorry British readers, but your American blogger just can’t bring himself to call it ‘football.’)

Nevertheless, this past Monday was a public holiday here in the land of ‘football,’ and it was a lovely warm late summer day. We took the young man to the park a few times, trying (and succeeding!) to tire him out before bed. Here’s a trio of videos of Nyan, budding footie star. (The first two are rather short, as we were having minor technical difficulties, but worth a quick watch.)

Yes, he needs to work on some, or all, of his skills. But the kid’s got heart!

A Visit to the Farm

n (2)

A couple weekends ago, Nyan took Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa to a place called Mudchute Park and Farm. It’s a pretty good sized area just south of Canary Wharf — that is to say, pretty much in the heart of London — that’s got acres and acres of forest, hills, and grazing land for a bunch of animals. Nyan had been to a farm or two in his day, but he’s getting more comfortable around the animals. Not entirely so, but getting there.

Here he is, feeding the goats with Daddy. Note that Nyan won’t hold the grass himself, but rather guides Daddy’s hand Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s Videos: Summertime Fun

We haven’t posted a lot lately, ’cause we’ve been busy packing house (more on that later). But this weekend, in fact the last week or so, the weather has been just perfect. Sunny, warm, no rain, no humidity either – lord knows we’ve earned a spot of good weather! So on Saturday afternoon, we took a little break from shoving stuff into cardboard boxes and spent some time in the backyard.

Among the highlights: Nyan and Daddy laid on the grass at one point, looking up at the sky. Daddy asked: What color is the sky? “Green!” Uh… But then an airplane went by, of course. “Airplane! People!” Yes, that’s right, there are people on there. “People going! bye bye!” Yep, they’re going. Where do you think they’re going? “Iowa!” We realized later, the only place he’s been on a plane (at least since he’s become somewhat conscious) has been to Iowa. So he associates planes with going to Iowa. Clever kid.

Other highlights were captured on these two videos. Here is he running (remember six months ago when the kid could hardly walk?), looking at the sprinkler, singing the ABC song, and asking Daddy for a cuddle – though only because he wanted to get high up so he could examine the bird feeder.

Later, he started picking up these solar-powered garden lights that we have shoved into the ground (yes, he’s been told not to, but hey…) and playing with them. Early on, Daddy tells him to not throw them in the air ’cause he’ll hurt himself. So he stopped throwing them, but still managed to poke his belly with one. And had to explain to his dense Daddy what happened. (Not to worry, folks: kid was fine after Daddy gave his belly a little get-well kiss.)
