Helping Around the House

Nyan loves to help. No matter what an adult is doing, Nyan has to do it too. It’s a great trait, almost always (and we’re still working on the best ways to use it to our advantage!). Here’s a good example, from a few months back. Uncle Jeff was visiting us in London from the U.S., and bought a few bottles of British beer that he wanted to pack up and ship home. Guess who decided to help out. (And he actually did a pretty good job helping!)

Photo of the Day: Selfie

Not actually a selfie; Daddy took this shot. But it has that selfie sort of feel, no?

National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is housed in a grand old colonial building not far from downtown and the shopping district of Orchard Road. I can’t tell you what all is in the museum, but they recently opened a new section just for kids, and better yet, it was free – so Nyan and Daddy headed down there.

It was a bit of an odd display, to be honest, but no complaints; it was fun, it was interesting, it kept the boy occupied for a while. One room had a pretend kitchen, which of course our boy took to like a fish to water, or a chef to a kitchen.

There was also a giant TV that was open at the back – intended, I think, for kids to put on puppet shows and pretend they’re on TV. And some sort of faux reel-to-reel tape player. Not sure what the point of that was, to be honest.

The best part – Nyan’s favorite certainly – was this giant fabric thingie with all these holes. You were supposed to roll these plastic balls along the fabric and into the holes – but it was tough because the fabric was uneven, so the balls went every which way. It kept Nyan occupied for quite a while:

And Nyan. Oh Nyan. That friendly and cute little girl is trying to help you out! She’s trying to give you balls to roll down! But you, you little boy you, you don’t care. Ah, Nyan.

Photo of the Day: Easy Rider

Down the road from our apartment is a bunch of restaurants, and outside one of them is an old motorcycle that’s been set up as a coin-operated toy – the idea being, drop a coin in the slot and the thing will vibrate and make noise and bring joy to a certain almost-three-year-old boy. So the other night, Daddy lifted Nyan onto the bike and Mommy dropped in a coin.

And nothing happened. The damn thing was broken! Oh well. Nyan still enjoyed it, somewhat.

Photo of the Day: Silly Faces

Just Nyan messing around in front of Daddy’s camera. Making goofy faces. Just because.

Photo of the Day: Nyan Thomas, Fire Chief

The other day we visited a firefighting museum at a local fire station. Small, but actually quite impressive, with lots of old fire engines, several displays of fire fighting techniques, and the like. And best of all, perhaps, they had a toy fire helmet for Nyan to wear.

Photo of the Day: Mango

Our boy has been a big fan of pureed mangos since, well, pretty much ever. His favorite brand is tough to find out here, so we were quite pleased to find that he will now eat other brands. Whew.

The stuff’s all imported – even though mangos grow everywhere in the tropics, of course – so it’s insanely expensive. So it’s now a treat rather than a near-staple. No more of these sessions where he’ll eat three pouches in one sitting, and then have some more later on. Here he is enjoying the rare treat, long legs and all.

Photo of the Day: Nice Hat

We went to a store at a mall. There was a hat. Nyan plopped it on his head as he sat on Daddy’s shoulders. Daddy took a photo. The end.

Nyan Thomas, Paleontologist

Down by the water in downtown Singapore, there’s an odd building called the Art Science Museum. It’s shaped somewhat like a giant metallic lotus flower, I’m told – very striking in any case. Inside is a rotating series of art and other displays (recent exhibits include photographs of Annie Liebovitz, for instance).

Another current exhibit is all about dinosaurs – so in late May, before we moved in to our new apartment, Daddy and Nyan braved the midday heat and spent a couple cool hours in the dark halls of the exhibit. And because it was a weekday, and maybe because it was rather expensive, we had the place pretty much to ourselves!

Walking like a dinosaur:

Checking out a giant dino skull:

(Note: not a real skull – none of the bones you’ll see in these videos are real – but a very realistic looking plaster cast of a real skull).

Seemingly more fascinated by the gravel than by the giant dinosaur (that’s our boy…):

And here he is in the arts and crafts section at the end of the exhibit, showing off his jumping moves in front of a mirror.

And finally, this is the little pool at the bottom of the inside of the lotus flower. A pretty cool structure!

Photo of the Day: Unpacking

Nyan was very adamant that he help us unpack in our new apartment. Unpacking to him mostly meant throwing packing paper around, and hiding underneath it. Still, we appreciated his assistance, I suppose.
