Nyan’s First Shiner

Well, we knew this day would happen. Ever since Nyan started walking, Daddy has tried to steel himself by saying, ‘There’ll be some day when he just runs into a table or something and hurts himself.’ The kid just has one gear – full steam ahead – and not always the best coordination.

It took longer than we might have thought, but the other day it happened: Nyan hurt himself (only slightly!) by running around. It happened at school, when he and his class were playing outside in the enclosed area behind the nursery on a gorgeous spring day. Nyan was running around, of course, and what happened next was so quick that no adult actually saw it happen – but Nyan went up to one of his carers, holding his head. They asked what happened. “I fell into a tree!”

Seems the young man was running and either tripped and fell into a tree, or just, um, ran into a tree. Either way, he ended up with a little abrasion above his right eye, which later swelled up a bit. They treated him with cold compresses and lots of cuddles, and that was that.

As it happened, we had a scheduled check-up with our neighborhood doctor that evening. Just to be sure, Daddy had the doc check out Nyan’s forehead: nope, no serious damage, no damage to the eye socket, no nothing. Just a scrape and a black eye. His first mobility injury, but probably not the last. Let’s just hope it’s the worst one he suffers.

Wintertime Photos

Just unloading a handful of photos, in no particular order, from January and February that, far as we can remember, didn’t make it in to any other posts. Also a couple of random videos from the same timeframe. Enjoy!

Nyan Thomas and the Chocolate Dinosaur

A few scenes from a lazy Saturday morning. Starting at the breakfast table, where a mention from Nyan that his piece of toast was actually a dinosaur prompted Daddy to start filming. Watch the rest:

Here he is a bit later, burning off some of his voluminous energy:

And later still, just playing in the front room and listening to all the ‘loud noises’:

A Song Called Cheese

A couple weeks back, Daddy got a rare few minutes to sit down and play some random notes on the piano. Nyan actually allowed it! (Usually he’ll either join in or demand that Daddy stop playing and go play cars with him.) This time, though, Daddy played on as Nyan grabbed Daddy’s camera and tried to take photos with it. The rest… well, just watch this video.

Home Again

As you saw in the last post, Nyan Thomas had an unexpected trip to Colchester over the weekend while Mommy and Daddy got over their flu-like symptoms. He came home this evening, exhausted and very happy and – so far – still showing no signs of any illness himself, though we will monitor him closely.

In any case, he was one jolly little fella this evening, as you can see here. (Mommy and Daddy were doing something down the hall, in the kitchen, when we heard his voice…we snuck down the hall, camera in hand, hoping to catch him doing whatever; but we live in a 130-year-old house and the floorboard squeaked, dammit, so he knew we were there…)

I love how he gets up from his comfy seat when Daddy can’t get the lighting just right… Actually there’s a lot to love in this video.

(No video exists of the massive tantrum he threw when it was time for a bath; when the little dude gets tired, he gets *really* tired and nothing will console him. Not pretty. But after a few minutes of screaming, bawling, crying, and slapping at Daddy, he’s over it and he’s giving cuddles and kisses again. But no video of that either.)

The Year That Was (in video)

It’s the end of 2013, of course, so it’s time to take a quick look back at, yes, the year that was. Remember this time last year? The little man had just started to take his tentative first steps and he was hardly speaking a word… and now: We can’t keep up with our boy, in word or in steps. It’s fair to say it was a very active and eventful year.

With that in mind, we’ve grabbed a video from each of the past 12 months and share them here. Enjoy this look back at Nyan Thomas in 2013!

January: Starting to walk. And falling down.

February: Getting better at the whole walking thing. Dancing too!

Nyan the Builder

More from our trip to Iowa, now almost two months ago: Mommy and Grandma went shopping one day, with Nyan, and came across a big Bob the Builder ride – one of those deals where you drop in a few coins and it rumbles and shakes and blares music for a few minutes. Did Nyan love it? He did.

(It’s not that he’s into Bob the Builder – he’s not really into any of those mass-commercialized characters, be it Disney or Nickelodeon or wherever Bob the Builder comes from; that’s very much by design. But the young man is very much into tractors, trucks, loud noises and the like. As we’ve said before: he’s definitely a little boy.)

Progress Report: Nyan at 19 Months

Every few months, we get an in-depth assessment from Nyan’s daycare/nursery about his progress. We got one back in early March, and I typed the notes up, and am finally getting around to sharing it here. These notes are from when he was about 19 months old, and he’s actually developed quite a bit since then, especially when it comes to talking. But here’s the notes from early March, for posterity if nothing else. It makes for a nice snapshot of how our boy was acting, and what he was doing, at about 19 months old.

(The notes on ‘developmental stage’ refers to what the ‘normal’ range for when a kid does certain things. He was right on schedule.)

Personal, Social and Emotional

Self confidence and awareness:
Nyan is a bubbly, confident boy. He loves coming to nursery. He always comes in with a big smile on his face. Nyan is very good at finding his own nose, eyes etc and is also able to identify them on his carers. Read the rest of this entry »

The Curious Incident of Nyan Thomas in the Tub

Fun little story here. Today at school, our hero pooped a little bit, but Sally (or Lallie, as Nyan calls her) warned us that there was, how you say, more still up there, and that we should be ready for it. Well. Fast-forward to bath time this evening. (Think you know where this one is going? Well, read on…)
