Fun Times in Iowa (Part One)

We’ve been in Iowa — Daddy’s home state — for, gosh, six weeks? seven weeks? Something like that. It’s safe to say that Nyan has had the Best Summer Ever. In no particular order, he’s enjoyed a nonstop stream of toys, fire trucks, swimming, cement mixers, trains, Grandma and Grandpa, cows, books, fishing, fuel trucks, airplanes, cousins and aunts and uncles, car rides… I’m sure I’ve forgotten about a zillion things.

And of course, Daddy has been snapping about a zillion pictures. Here, in no particular order, are a small sampling. Most of these are from late June, early in our sojourn here. We’ll post up some more in coming days.

Bonus, just for fun: a couple of shots of Iowa at sunset at the peak of summer. Pretty, no?

Nyan Thomas, Apple Farmer

A few months back, we somehow got it in our heads that it’d be fun to plant a tree at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Grandma and Grandpa have a lush, beautifully gardened back yard that’s full of flowers and trees, but they were happy to make room for another tree. Nyan wanted to plant an apple tree, and because of the need for pollination and whatnot, you can’t just plant one apple tree; gotta be two.

So not long after we arrived in Iowa, it was off to the garden store where Nyan picked out a pair of apple trees. And not long after that, he was out in the garden, digging holes and filling them up with apples.

The trees actually already have a few small apples on them, and they should bear full-sized apples within just a few years, if all goes well. But Daddy’s hope is that in a few decades, Nyan can make a trip back to Iowa City and can stop by his Grandma and Grandpa’s old house (assuming it’s not still in the family, of course) and sneak into the backyard to take a look at the trees he planted.

Nyan Thomas, Gardener

Maybe it’s his Iowa farming roots, or maybe it’s his West Country of England farming roots. Or maybe it’s just that he always wants to help. Whatever the reason, Nyan loves helping out when Grandma is out in the garden. (Same here in Singapore: we have but one solitary houseplant so far, out on the balcony, awaiting transplanting into a bigger pot. Daddy can’t go out there to give it some water without a little helper tagging along and ‘helping.’)

Here are some shots from some cool early spring days in Iowa, Nyan doing his best to make sure Grandma’s garden looks great.

A Day at the Park

We know, we know, we’ve been quite remiss in posting new pics and videos as of late, we realize. Apologies. Still living out of suitcases, which is causing all sorts of havoc with trying to do things like make blog posts on a regular basis. All good, don’t get us wrong – we’re just a little off kilter. Expect fresh stories, photos and videos to resume in the very near future.

Meantime, let’s go back in time a couple months – early spring, Daddy’s hometown. It was a cool but sunny afternoon, and Nyan and Daddy headed to the neighborhood park, a place called Willow Creek Park, for some fresh air and general fun.

He really wanted to commandeer this soccer ball, but instead he decided to just go for a jog.

And here he is riding a plastic seahorse. I’m not sure what sound a seahorse makes, but I betcha it sounds a lot like whatever it is Nyan is saying in this video:

Similarly, riding a plastic fish.

And of course it’s not a trip to the park without playing on a slide:

Come back soon for photos and videos from the Singapore Zoo, from a dance-off between Nyan and a 19-month-old boy at an Orchard Road mall food court, from Nyan running down the hall of our hotel, and much more.

Nyan Thomas in Iowa

We’ve been in Iowa the past three weeks, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it! There will surely be more to come, particularly some fun videos. But for now, here’s a bunch of Nyan Thomas in the Hawkeye state.

Cousins

We had a big family dinner at a local restaurant this evening – Grandma, Grandpa, Uncles Scott and Mike, Aunts Maggie and Sarah, and cousins Mia and Kennedy. Oh, plus Nyan and Daddy of course.

After some good food, the cousins were running around the joint, dancing to the music, and generally being kids. Here’s Nyan showing off his dance moves, while little Kennedy (who’s a bit over a year old) tries to give him a cuddle. Poor Kennedy though; Nyan was only interested in dancing.

And here’s Nyan with Mia. “Make silly faces!” was Mia’s command.

Nyan Thomas at the Dinner Table

A trio of silliness at (and around) the dinner table.

Playing with a a tow truck while waiting for a big pancake:

Taking off socks, fastening seat belts, and other ways we play instead of eat:

Getting in a bit of morning exercise, then unwinding with a toy house:

(All of these were, of course, shot in Iowa a couple months back.)

Nyan Thomas in the Kitchen

Here’s a trio of fun videos from December of our boy undertaking various kitchen activities.

Nyan Thomas, baking a cake and making cups of tea for a very appreciative Mommy and Daddy:

Helping Grandma with the (real) dishes. He loves those purple gloves!

Singing a song as he gets ready to help Grandpa make cookies:

A Day at the Museum

Back in December, Daddy took Nyan and Grandma to a place called the Iowa Children’s Museum. It’s attached to this big shopping mall and is, I think, intended as a place for kids to chill out while their parents spend money at the stores.

It’s an okay place, if a little worn down. Plenty of things to do: there was a life-sized model ambulance, a room made to look like a grocery store, another like a kitchen, and so forth. Here’s our hero behind the wheel of the fake ambulance (which we had a hard time getting him out of):

There was also a room filled with drums, xylophones and other musical instruments:

And there was a large display of model airlanes, ranging from life-size to minis.

As well as demonstrations of air in action – like a thing where you make a parachute fall from 30 feet up, or this demonstration of ping-pong balls and jets of air:

And there was a big, mostly empty room that featured a long wooden ramp-ish think, like a roller coaster. The idea was to drop a golf ball from the start and get it to go all the way. Harder than it sounds – but Nyan and Grandma made it work.

I can’t say that we’ll ever rush back to the place, as it was a bit costly to get into, and just seemed a bit run-down, especially for the price. But Nyan loved it, which of course is what counts.

Nyan Thomas in Iowa

No real rhyme or reason here, just a handful of shots from Nyan’s visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s in Iowa last month. Being silly, being happy, playing, wearing hats or other random things on his head, reading the newspaper… this is our boy.
