A Super-Fun Day with Grandma and Grandpa

Maybe the best day ever? Probably right up there, as you’ll see…

It was a warm day in the middle of summer. Mommy was in California for some business meetings, Daddy was in New York for some business meetings, and Nyan… Nyan got to cruise around Iowa with Grandma and Grandpa. First up was a visit to a real live dairy farm.

Nyan wasn’t all that keen on touching the cows, but he and Grandma (and Nyan’s stuffed pal Woody) did have some fun at one of the cut-out photo op places:

And an unexpected bonus: visiting the dairy farm at the same time was a group of farmers who were driving their tractors around the area. It’s called, a tractor brigade or a tractorcade (we’re not quite sure, and to be honest, this is the first time Daddy has ever heard of such a thing, though he’s told now that this is relatively common among farming folk. Kinda like a gang of farmers, I guess?). Whatever it’s called, it means dozens of tractors lined up in the parking lot. For an almost-four-year-old boy who’s into tractors and all other things mechanical, it was heaven.

But the fun wasn’t over. Far from it. Next stop, the small town of Independence, Iowa, where an old steam engine (and its caboose) sits outside the old train station. Once again, our hero was just a wee bit happy. First time he’d ever seen a real live steam engine in person!

He took a long nap during the 90-minute drive home. Tuckered out but very happy.

Nyan Thomas, Apple Farmer

A few months back, we somehow got it in our heads that it’d be fun to plant a tree at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Grandma and Grandpa have a lush, beautifully gardened back yard that’s full of flowers and trees, but they were happy to make room for another tree. Nyan wanted to plant an apple tree, and because of the need for pollination and whatnot, you can’t just plant one apple tree; gotta be two.

So not long after we arrived in Iowa, it was off to the garden store where Nyan picked out a pair of apple trees. And not long after that, he was out in the garden, digging holes and filling them up with apples.

The trees actually already have a few small apples on them, and they should bear full-sized apples within just a few years, if all goes well. But Daddy’s hope is that in a few decades, Nyan can make a trip back to Iowa City and can stop by his Grandma and Grandpa’s old house (assuming it’s not still in the family, of course) and sneak into the backyard to take a look at the trees he planted.

More Artwork by Nyan

Nyan recently received a lovely Valentines Day card in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa. He loved it – so much so that he wanted to take it to school the next day to show his friends and teachers. So we packed it into his backpack and set off for school.

At the end of the day, when Daddy picked him up from school, Nyan pulled a piece of paper out of his backpack that his teachers had put in there for it to be taken home. It was some art he had made, a picture of My Grandmother: the paper had black lines on it to show the shape of Grandma’s body and head, and Nyan had added her facial feature and colored her hair.

He opted for a monochromatic green effect, which was an interesting artistic choice, art critics agree. Nevertheless, the end result is both charming and loving at the same time. Enjoy.

Nyan Thomas, Gardener

Maybe it’s his Iowa farming roots, or maybe it’s his West Country of England farming roots. Or maybe it’s just that he always wants to help. Whatever the reason, Nyan loves helping out when Grandma is out in the garden. (Same here in Singapore: we have but one solitary houseplant so far, out on the balcony, awaiting transplanting into a bigger pot. Daddy can’t go out there to give it some water without a little helper tagging along and ‘helping.’)

Here are some shots from some cool early spring days in Iowa, Nyan doing his best to make sure Grandma’s garden looks great.

Nyan Thomas in Autumn

A couple weeks back, when Grandma was here, she and Nyan had a blast on the walk home from school, playing with the leaves.

They also checked out the remains of a huge old tree that was toppled in the big windstorm we had at the end of October.

Fun with Grandma!

Grandma came to visit a couple weeks back. Did Nyan enjoy himself? Did Grandma? Were Mommy and Daddy thrilled to have her visit? Yes, yes and yes.

(click any photo to make it big)

Grandma brought a couple of presents, including this tractor-and-wagon that Grandpa helped pick out. The boy certainly loves tractors!

Grandma took Nyan on plenty of walks and plenty of trips to the playground, of course.

Most though, it was just relax around the house, read books, cuddle and play. Nothing wrong with any of that!

Nyan Thomas, Shop Keeper

One of Nyan’s favorite things to do is to crawl into his “house” (it looks like a tall chair to some, but it’s actually a house that also serves as a storefront convenience store) and offer ice cream, cake, and other delectables his customers. Here he is, serving ice cream to Grandma and Daddy.

Nyan Thomas’s Big Super-fun Weekend

Oh what a weekend we’ve had. A weekend filled with Grandma, and trucks, and Uncle Iain, and much more. We’ve got one tired little man today! Here are some highlights.

On Thursday, Uncle Iain and Auntie Zuzu were coming down for a visit. We’d mentioned – once – to Nyan that Iain was going to be driving this big-ass American-style pickup truck that Nyan really loves. By the time they picked him up from nursery mid-afternoon, it turned out that he had been telling everyone – his carers and his fellow students – all day long that Uncle Iain was bringing him a truck! So Nyan proudly strutted his stuff to the truck, no doubt casting a look back at his classmates that said ‘See ya, suckas!’

Here he is, in front of our house with Mommy, playing around with the truck: Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s Videos: Happy Birthday, Grandma!

It’s Grandma L.’s birthday today, and in her honor, Nyan has asked your humble blog writer to post a few Grandma-related videos. Here we have the young man having a recent phone conversation, of sorts, with the birthday girl:

Here we have Mommy reading to Nyan, who then scampers over to pick up one of the books he has that features the voice of Grandma reading to him: Read the rest of this entry »
