Slime and Soccer with Mia

Nyan got to spend some quality time with cousin Mia during his trip to Iowa. What did they get up to? Well, they tried their hand at making slime:

They goofed around with their hair and glasses at a restaurant. Well, to be precise, Mia (and Aunt Maggie) did while Nyan giggled.

They hung out on the couch while Mia played with her new iPhone:

And, maybe best of all, they hung out in the backyard. There were some (attempts at) cartwheels…

And there was soccer. Mia’s been playing for years; Nyan’s been playing for months. We thought some of her skills might rub off on the lad. That remains to be seen, but at least they had fun.

Flashback Fun with Cousins

Many years ago – about five or so – a young Nyan Thomas went to England (he was living New York at the time) and hung out with his doting cousins, Hetty and Poppy. The three starred in these lovely videos, which you should re-watch right now because they will be very important to understand the rest of this blog post:

With a young Hetty:

With a young Poppy:

Fast-foward many years to autumn of 2016, when all three have put on several years of good living. They all got together again, and decided to recreate those earlier videos. The results? They speak for themselves:

I suppose now we’ll have to recreate these videos every few years for the rest of their lives, maybe? Eh, could be worse.

Family Fun Day Downtown

One day in December, we all headed downtown to play tourist for a day. There was a museum exhibit we wanted to check out, so we thought we’d see some other sights along the way.

Here we are in the lobby of Daddy’s office building, just enjoying the scenery.

We had a nice lunch overlooking the Singapore River:

And wandered around a bit, enjoying some sculptures and more views of the river:

But the real goal of our midday amble was the Asian Civilizations Museum, which was hosting a traveling exhibition of some artwork from Mommy’s homeland of Myanmar.

Nyan was very into it. He really loved sprawling on the floor and drawing pictures of what he was seeing. He and Daddy also tried sitting in the Buddha pose, copying the many Buddha statues on display.

A very pleasant way to spend a sunny winter’s day in Singapore.

Christmas in Singapore

It was, of course, not a White Christmas in Singapore this year. Or any year. But we still did a good job getting into the holiday spirit. Let’s take a look:

Here’s Nyan and Mommy, getting our little Christmas tree ready, and doing other things to get into the festive spirit:

And a few pieces of artwork that Nyan made (paintings, mostly) in the weeks leading up to Dec. 25:

Grandma and Grandpa, in their never-ending quest to spoil their grandson, had sent over a box full of 24 little presents — one for Nyan to open each morning in December. Here’s just a few of the moments when he was unwrapping.

On Christmas Eve, an aunt was in town, so we had dinner at a Chinese restaurant downtown. And look who stopped by our table!

Finally: the big day. Christmas morning! Daddy asked Nyan to wait til Daddy could get a cup of coffee. It was hard, but Nyan managed to wait:

And then: Attack the presents! He opened them all in a matter of minutes, it seemed. But still managed to play with, and model, some of them

We had a plane to Thailand to catch later in the day. But first: Christmas dinner with Kyle and his family. Here’s Nyan, waiting for the taxi:

Kyle and Nyan played while the food was being prepared. And what a spread! Delicious.

Afterwards, we hung out for a while, playing with toys – including the adults, who played with the virtual reality video game. The kids did too. Fun, if a little silly:

And then….off to Thailand! But we’ll save that for upcoming posts.

Fun Times with the Iowa Fam

Nyan always has a great time whenever we’re able to visit Iowa. And why not? It’s clean, spacious, plenty to see and do, and lots of family members to dote on him. He certainly had fun this fall with Grandma and Grandpa:

And with cousin Mia too:

And he had a blast at Uncle Scott and Aunt Maggie’s too — where Uncle Scott made him a nameplate in his wood shop and Grandpa let him drive the lawnmower.

In fact, Nyan enjoys Iowa so much that he’ll often say he wants to live there! When we mention that it gets really, really cold there, he shrugs and says ‘I like the cold.’ No, son, not this kind of cold you don’t. But still – great to see him embracing his paternal roots, for sure.

More Family Fun in the UK

Some more random photos and videos of Nyan enjoying his time with the K clan in England.

Here’s some more good times playing with Elodie:

An eagle eye’s view of Nyan goofing around in the back garden with his cousins:

And more photos. More family fun!

Diggerland!

An hour or so outside of London is a kid’s paradise known as Diggerland. Someone took a bunch of old construction equipment — backhoes, trucks, and of course diggers — and turned it into a theme park for kids. One day during our August sojourn in England, Auntie Zuzu and Uncle Iain took Nyan there for the day – and a splendid time was had by all.

Here’s an assortment of snapshots that should give a pretty good sense of all the fun that was had:

And yes you can see a couple pictures of a giant digger thing being used as a thrill ride. Not bad at all:

Fun with Family, UK Style

Let’s take a look at some of the fun times our hero had with his cousins and other family members in England back in August.

Check out those trampolining skills!

Random scenes:

The littlest one there is Elodie, his young cousin, whom he met for the first time this trip. But they quickly became best friends. Here they are together; I think Nyan is teaching her how to dance:

A few more photos:

And finally, more play time with Elodie. Except this time it’s mostly Nyan making a ‘sandwich’ out of pillows. (Anything green represented ‘salad,’ a.k.a. lettuce for the sandwich.) Elodie, meanwhile, is more interested in just wearing Nyan’s Star Wars hat.

Dancing King

One of the highlights of our recent trip around the world — six and a half weeks, split evenly between the UK and the US — was a family get together outside of London. Nyan got to hang with Phwa Phwa and his aunties, uncles and cousins, including here with Poppy at a country pub:

At the actual get-together itself, the dress was formal, and I dare say Nyan fills out fancy dress just fine. Check him out posing with his cousins and with Mommy and Daddy:

And strutting around like he owns the place:

And giving kisses to cousin Elodie:

The highlight, though, was absolutely what happened at night. There was a dance floor and a DJ, and let’s just say that our young man absolutely wiped the floor with everybody else. Dude was out of control. Off the chain. On fire. Etc. Here’s a million videos of the boy and his moves:

The jacket came off pretty soon, of course.

Eventually the shirt came off and this dancing fool was down to his vest:

He started to run out of steam eventually:

Definitely getting tired, though he found a last burst of energy:

Still, he outlasted many of the adults and it was nearly midnight before he finally passed out. What a night!

Birthday Party Part One

Back over the summer – July 26, to be exact – our boy had a birthday. Turned four years old. We happened to be in Iowa at the time (to be precise, we happened to have planned our trip to make sure we’d still be there on the 26th) so Grandma and Grandpa helped Mommy and Daddy throw a big ol’ bash.

20150725_221733

It was a real family affair, with dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins, you name it Lots of kids too, and they all had a blast together:

There were gifts to open too:

And of course, there was cake. Dinosaur cake.

And this wasn’t planned, but at some point, Mommy Daddy and Nyan were out on the front porch, and someone had a camera, so we did an impromptu photo shoot.

So why did we call this post “Birthday Party, Part One”? Because we had another birthday party when we got back to Singapore. We’ve got pictures from that one too, which we’ll share in the near future…
