Just a couple of screenshots from a recent Skype call with the little man. Apologies for the rather lousy quality of the photos.
Kid’s got more frequent flyer miles than most adults! Yes, he’s back in the UK for the next couple-few weeks. Mommy has some career-related things to take care of over there, so off they went.
It is, as you can imagine, a bit quiet here at NyanThomas.com Global Headquarters on the Mean Streets of Park Slope, Brooklyn. But fret not, dear blog reader; we have a bunch of photos and videos to share in the coming days, and we’ll also be sharing fresh new content from the UK as well. So don’t forget to check back soon!
In the meantime, a couple photos from the trip to the airport, and an anecdote: I drove them to JFK and dropped them off at the terminal to start the check-in procedure while I parked the car and brought the luggage in. When I got up to the Virgin Atlantic check-in area, a few check-in people were standing there, ready to direct me to where I needed to go. I explained that my wife was already checking in and that I was just bringing the bags… “Oh, yes, they’re right over there,” the woman exclaimed. “You have an adorable son!”
Yes, it seems that Nyan Thomas had turned on the charm. And he kept it going, too, as we finished the check-in procedures. He was all smiles and giggles at the women behind the counter. And they were all smiles and giggles right back.
It did not, unfortunately, land them a free upgrade, but hey.
Here, then, photos from just before Nyan and Mommy headed through security.
And a screenshot from a Skype call the other day…
The other day, we had an appointment near Chinatown in Manhattan, so I left work for a bit while Beatrice and Nyan came in from Brooklyn. Afterwards, I headed back to work while they strolled through the city and came across some sort of dragon parade. (I must confess that I’m not at all sure of the meaning or significance, but it looks pretty cool nonetheless). Some pics from the scene:
Earlier this week, we rented a car and headed down to Chinatown in Brooklyn for a midweek midday dim sum feast. We found this sprawling banquet hall of a restaurant that was jam packed with Asian families munching on their dim sum. The food was good, and your humble blogger’s dining companions were, of course, top notch.
Our boy enjoyed the stimulation – so many new smells, sounds, and people to see and charm!
Of course, his new thing is to have his fingers in his mouth at all times…
So daddy decided – for better or for worse – that two can play that game:
It was a touch chilly out, so we bundled him up before we strapped him into the stroller. The kid was happy to vamp for the camera, too…
We’re a bit late with this one; apologies, but it’s been a busy month. Nevertheless: in late January, young Nyan Thomas got a visit from Grandma L. and Aunt Maggie. Maggie could only stay a couple days, but Grandma got to stay for nearly a week. Let’s look at some pictures…
Grandma and our little guy:
Playtime with Aunt Maggie:
Uncle Scott didn’t make it this time, but he was there in spirit, as he and Maggie sent Nyan, for Christmas, a hand-made rocking horse (among other things). Awesome! And the boy LOVES it:
Aunt Maggie got to give the boy a bath. (Yes, we make all of our houseguests give our son a bath. Hey, when you consider how much our guests save in hotel costs, it’s worth it, no? And no one, least of all Nyan, seems to really mind…)
Lots of cuddle time too.
It’s been a relatively mild winter, which means Grandma got to stroll the mean streets of Brooklyn with our boy:
And of course, the boy loves his cuddles.
A couple quick updates: teething is proceeding right on schedule, with a confirmed two teeth now clearly visible on the bottom (and I think perhaps we can feel more coming in), and possibly some up on top getting ready to come in as well. Poor guy has been having teething pains, mostly in the middle of the night, but he’s a trooper, aided by lots of comforting from his sleepless parents and the occasional application of teething gel.
More importantly: the young man is figuring out how to crawl – and Sunday afternoon, he actually got it! Butt up in the air, propped up on his front arms, he scooted forward! It was a legitimate crawl, though just a one-time deal. But he did it again this morning. It won’t be long until he figures out how (or builds the strength) to do it for extended periods. At that point, of course, the entire apartment will be up for grabs. We’re still not sure how we’ll deal with that; the kid has boundless energy, and we can just imagine the hijinx he’s about to get into…
And here’s today’s photo, taken at breakfast this morning. He decided he wanted to hold the spoon and feed himself. Results, as you can see, were less than ideal, but it’s a start. (He grabbed it with his left hand; will he be a southpaw?)
The most recent in a series of photos of young Nyan Thomas and Mommy, taken at (roughly) the start of each month.
Click to enlarge; notice how the expression on his face – what the Brits I think would call ‘cheekiness’ – is there almost from the very beginning! Yes, this kid is going to be a handful. But in a charming and adorable way, we think.
